DECLINE IN PPV BOXING GOOD OR BAD?
San Francisco, CA– Throughout the decades of prizefighting since the the Marquess of Queensbury rules were applied, because of the various weight limits, boxing was obviously one of the fairest of competitions. But when the “house” fighter shows up 11 lbs., yes Omar Figueroa was 11 lbs. over at the weigh in for Antonio DeMarco, you knew this could only be boxing in Texas, where there really are no rules.
ALL THREE 2015 BOXING PPV BROADCASTS….SUCKED..
The three big Pay Per Vier offerings of the year were the anti-climactic Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao encounter, that Mayweather-Andre Berto yawn and the pedestrian Canelo Alvarez-Miguel Cotto match. There were no knockdowns, nobody got staggered, these 36 stanzas were so lacking that not one round could be used as a “Trailer” to entice people/boxing fans in the same manner movies are introduced.
“KEEPIN’ IT REAL” WITH HAYMON
In his first full year, Al Haymon has put PBC cards on NBC, CBS, ESPN, FOX, BOUNCE TV, TRU TV, el al, and never once asked the fan to pay cash money to view boxing. If you watched the Haymon productions thus far, you could see he’s trying to get boxing back on the minds and in the mouths of Americans queer to the game. But it appears that Al has instead of cultivating new backers, he’s brought boxing fans (who hadn’t watched boxing in years) BACK into the fold by giving them TV on Network and various Cable Networks.
GONNA SINGLE OUT PBC “MATCHMAKING”
There were only two upsets of note in But thus far, it has been “Quantity over Quality” and his matchmaking, that is Al’s most glaring deficiency. I’m not implying he’s matching his “A” guys vs. “B” guys, but whomever is making the matches can’t seem to make “exciting” fights. Most of the time the records are close and rarely does an A fighter meet C- or D class opposition. But the excitement, where is the excitement?
GOOD MATCHMAKERS ENVISION THE FIGHT & IT’S POTENTIAL ENDINGS
It looks as if someone is scripting fights that lack any exclamation points. And seeing this has been the case all year, is this a concerted effort on the part of PBC to “tone” down the violence? If it is the intent to make the world fall in love with the Floyd Mayweather mode of boxing, this will not be a resurgence, it’ll be the beginning of the end.
BACK TO FIGUEROA BEING 11 POUNDS HEAVY!
Antonio DeMarco of Mexico wasn’t being brought in to win vs. hometown lad and house guy Omar Figueroa. And when Omar came in double digits overweight, all PBC did was give DeMarco some more money to again, engage in a fight he would have little chance of winning had the weight been straight!
AL HAYMON NEEDS TO PUT HIS FOOT DOWN!
The last true bit of honesty and integrity in boxing is that the fighters are of the same weight. So many of Al Haymon’s clients have missed weight, some in “advertised” title fights that ended up not being such, leads me to think that the man pulling the strings behind the curtain, the Wizard of Boxing Al Haymon, may not be able to bring boxing once again to the mountaintop.
HAYMON MATCHMAKING LACKS “IMAGINATION”
Why do I say that? Having been a Licensed Matchmaker in California, Matchmaking, or the lack thereof at PBC, it is so glaring that it is as if they are making duller bouts intentionally. That is where Al Heymon needs somebody like a Don Chargin or Russell Peltz making matches. I’m sure this will go ignored because “The Wizard of Boxing” hears nothing from outside of his domain.
REMEMBER ROY JONES KO BY LEDEBEV? THIS WAS WORSE!
Enzo Maccarinelli (41-7, 33 KOs) KO 4 Roy Jones Jr. (62-9, 45 KOs), The guy that wouldn’t fight linear light heavyweight champ Darius Michalewski because he feared German cooking, will now go anywhere on the planet for a fight. Jones was knocked out in such a manner that brought back the movie Friday and getting, KTFU! Roy got up from an uppercut of Enzo before eating a right flush that knocked him into another time zone and receiving Oxygen.
HEAVYWEIGHT HOPE JOSHUA SLAMS AMATEUR CONQUERER
2012 Olympic king Anthony Joshua (15-0, 15 whacks) took some incoming missiles from Dillian Whyte (16-1, 13 KOs) that he took and responded well to. The 6’4 Whyte is anything but “fat” as one pundit cried in the blogosphere. With some ability and grit, Dillian wanted it, but want ain’t enough. The near 6’7 Joshua closed the show in round seven. Opening and finishing strong, got to give the winner a B for the win. Shopworn fellow Brit Derick Chisora (24-5, 16 KOs) is next for AJ in early April.
VERDEJO & DONAIRE WIN ON PUERTO RICAN CARD
Puerto Rico’s next star Felix Verdejo (19-0, 14 KOs) stopped overmatched Jose Dos Santos (27-4, 17 KOs) in two rounds as the 135 lber. seems poised to take the faded Miguel Cotto’s spot as the island’s best fighter.
“FILIPINO FLASH” WINS WBO 122 LB. BELT AGAIN!
Four division champ Nonito Donaire (36-3, 23 KOs) UD 12 Cesar Juarez (17-4, 13 KOs). WBO title on the line, the “Filipino Flash” is back at 122 where he belongs, as 126 was TOO big! We will see where this goes, but Donaire is back in the spotlight with an exciting win over a game competitor in Cesar Juarez.
