New York, NY – A barrage of fights are on the horizon this weekend as both of boxing’s major cable outlets for the sport are dealing out cards. HBO steals the thunder with an unprecedented two shows being offered by the network. First, let’s delve into the most hyped bout.
POWER HOUSE OF ENERGY
42,000 thousand fans are expected to be in attendance when reigning WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitischko (42-2, 39 KOs) meets rugged challenger Thomasz Adamek (44-1, 28 KOs) for 12 rounds of combat at the Stadion Miejski in Wroclaw, Poland, Saturday at 4:45 PM ET on HBO.
VITALI KLITSCHKO A NATURAL BORN DESTROYER
Having knocked out eight of his last ten challengers and boasting the sports highest knockout percentage of active champions, Vitali’s ability to handle heavyweight hopefuls has been unparalleled. Despite his advanced age of 40, Vitali still proves to be an insurmountable task to dethrone in the heavyweight ranks.
ADAMEK’S BOXING RUN AT HEAVYWEIGHT STILL NEEDS DEFINING FIGHT
Having beaten former cruiserweight (200) champions Steve Cunningham and O’Neil Bell, Adamek, to his credit; postmortem his triumphs has called out the biggest names in his former weight class. Without being able to secure a lucrative bout against Bernard Hopkins and by not landing a much-desired rematch against his only loss to Chad Dawson (L UD 12), Adamek has moved up to the heavyweight ranks. Albeit against hapless scrapers, Tomasz has six bouts with six wins under his belt (2 KOs).
ROUND 2
A showdown of potential throw down surfaces later in the evening as highly entertaining featherweight (128) Yuriorkis Gamboa (20-0, 16 KOs) meets rough and tough scrapper Daniel Ponce De Leon (41-3, 34 KOs) over 12 or less rounds at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey at 10:30 PM ET Saturday on HBO.
GAMBOA HAS FLAIR FOR THE DRAMATIC
Having dismantled eight of his last ten opponents in emphatic knockout fashion, often coming off the canvas in doing so, Yuriorkis Gamboa is quickly becoming “must see TV” for fight fans. With his “hit and get hit” style and blindingly fast combinations of awful intent, Gamboa’s bouts frequently showcase wars of immense intestinal fortitude.
PONCE LOOKING TO POUNCE ON GAMBOA’S PARADE
Best known for being annihilated in just one round against Juan Manuel Lopez, Daniel Ponce De Leon, in wake of that embarrassment; displayed an assault of punishing craft and went onto win seven straight (4 KOs). However in his last effort, De Leon was beat on like a rock drummer pounding skins in route to a unanimous 10 round points nod against Adrien Broner.
SHOWTIME JOINT
The critically acclaimed series “Shobox” returns with solid double header featuring up and coming welterweight (147) pugs Hector Sanchez (19-1, 9 KOs) and Vincent Arroyo (11-1, 7 KOs) throwing hands over a proposed 10 frame main event. Devastating power punching cruiserweight (200) Lateef Kayode (17-0, 14 KOs) squares off against seasoned veteran Felix Cora Jr. (22-5-2, 12 KOs) in a scheduled 10 round curtain raiser. Televised coverage from the Grand Casino in Hinckley, Minnesota begins on Friday at 11 pm ET on Showtime.
