UFC AIRS LIVE SATURDAY FROM STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN
San Francisco, CA– There is a pretty good UFC card emanating from Sweden tomorrow (Saturday) starting at 12:30 PM PT. The main event pits light heavyweights (205 lbs) Alexander Gustafsson (13-1) vs. Thiago Silva (14-2). The pick here is neither guy as the fight looks “even.” Some of my UFC guys like Gustafsson, while an equal number favor Silva.
NOW THE NOT-SO GOOD NEWS ON THE UFC CARD!
Although the fight card is sold out in Sweden, those of us here in the United States have a dilemma and that is Fuel TV is not in enough homes! I know Comcast doesn’t carry Fuel TV, a station much like Spike TV that many years ago built it’s rep on the Ultimate Fighting Championships. Even with limited coverage, Fuel TV is garnering their best viewer numbers ever! Those of you that have asked me about this repeatedly, you might want to try and watch the prelims on Facebook at 12:30 PM PT and then on Fuel TV at 3 PM PT. ALISTAIR OVEREEM WILL STILL FACE JUNIOR DOS SANTOS FOR UFC TITLE
The second most anticipated UFC fight outside of next week’s (April 21) UFC 145 with defending champion Jon Jones engaging former stablemate Rashad Evans, is the UFC heavyweight title throw-down between challenger Alistair Overeem and titleholder Junior Dos Santos on May 26 at UFC 146. The fight is thought to be in peril when the Nevada Athletic Commission “surprised” Overeem and other fighters on the UFC 146 card and asked them to submit to drug testing.
DON’T THINK THE TEST WAS LEGAL!
Seeing Overeem wasn’t a licensed fighter at the time, I would have told Keith Kizer of the Nevada Commission to go jump in Lake Mead. Instead, Overeem took the test and had a high level of Testosterone. Although I don’t feel that the testing was “legal” per se, my sources say that Overeem had taken a Testosterone shot a few days prior to the press conference and it had not metabolized by the time he was tested. That being said, I expect Overeem to apply for a license and pass any and all tests put forth by the Nevada Commission.
RETIRED UFC CHAMP BROCK LESNAR RETURNS TO “WORKED” FIGHTS & WWE
Although it has been a rumor going around ever since he lost the UFC heavyweight title in 2010 to Cain Velasquez, who in his first defense dropped the championship to current champ Junior Dos Santos, Brock Lesnar has inked a one-year deal with the World Wrestling Entertainment empire run by the pompous and despicable Vince McMahon. The pact is said to worth $5 million and word has it Lesnar doesn’t have to appear week in and week out on TV!
LOVED WRESTLING FIGURE CHIEF JAY STRONGBOW PASSES
For those of you that remember the days when a call from a pay phone cost a dime, a wrestling icon Joe Scarpa, better known as Chief Jay Strongbow to wrestling fans for three decades passed away at 83 a fortnight ago. Playing the Native-American #1 or #2 baby-face (good guy) in the WWWF (now the WWE), Scarpa was actually an Italian-American. Wrestling past his prime, as do a lot of professional wrestlers, I saw Strongbow in the 1970s when San Francisco promoter Roy Shire would bring him in for the annual 18-man over the top rope battle royal. if my memory serves me correctly, Strongbow was sitting with “Andre The Giant” in a bar that at the time was located right next door to the famed San Francisco Cow Palace, which ironically is actually located in Daly City, CA. That was a night where I wish I had a camera as Andre was drinking pitchers of beer, not regular mugs! Andre had the biggest hands I’ve ever seen in my life!
