CHRIS WEIDMAN THE NEXT UFC SUPERSTAR?

San Francisco, CA–  When you realize that UFC middleweight (185 lb.) Anderson Silva is the longest reining UFC champ in history with 11 defenses (tied with Georges St. Pierre), you need to know that at some point in time the end of any era comes.  That being said, that’ll most likely be the case when undefeated Chris Weidman challenges Silva in the UFC 162 main event.

SIZING UP CHAMPION & CHALLENGER

Physically Silva and Weidman are about the same at 6’2, 185, but the challenger has a slight reach advantage.  The telling point here is “mileage” and lack there of.  Unbeaten (9-0) Weidman’s youth at 29 vs the 38-year old veteran who is 33-4.  When you couple the “mileage” factor with Weidman not only being undefeated, but he is “untouched,” meaning he has never been taken down in his career.

DESTRUCTION OF MARK MUNOZ UNFORSEEN BY MOST

His overwhelming Mark Munoz last year in what was to most a big upset seeing MM is a former NCAA wrestling champion who could not “touch” Chris and was systematically destroyed before being stopped in round two via punches (KO).  Although Munoz is now claiming he had a broken foot, the total domination put forth by Weidman was something to be in awe of.  What I took note of was the fact that Weidman has never been taken down in his nine MMA fights.

NOT ALONE IN PICKING WEIDMAN

Unbeaten heavyweight and Strikeforce Grand Prix champion Daniel Cormier (14-0) thinks Weidman wins this, as does UFC light heavy Kyle Kingsbury, so while I’m not alone, the masses are still behind Silva.  At fight time the odds should be about 2-1, the lowest odds on a Silva fight in my memory.  What I’m trying to say is that the Anderson Silva run of immortality is over.  First fight starts at 3:30 PM PT on Facebook.com while main card with Frankie Edgar (15-4-1) vs. Charles Oliveira (16-3) in the co-main event, a fight that Edgar is favored and should prevail.
