“PRODIGY” PENN RETIRES MATT HUGHES

Detroit, MI– It’s tough to write off a legendary fighter like B.J. Penn. But after two convincing losses to Frankie Edgar, and in the process dropping the UFC lightweight (155 lbs) title, I thought Penn was too small to compete in the welterweight (170) division. Last night, against former welter champ Matt Hughes, Penn landed a counter right at the start of the fight and it was over 21 seconds later!

PENN IN LINE FOR KOSCHECK-ST. PIERRE WINNER?

Does one win against a faded ex-champ mean Penn can hang with Georges St. Pierre? Remember when they did fight a couple of years ago, Pierre’s corner put Vaseline on him before
the second and third rounds? Penn complained, but St. Pierre and crew played dumb, apologized, and that was the end of it as far the P.R. savvy UFC folks were concerned. St. Pierre meets Josh Koscheck next month.

MR. T FROM “A TEAM” GETS RAZOR CLOSE CALL

In the light heavyweight (205) encounter between ex-champs Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Lyoto Machida, Jackson won a split call 29-28 twice. The third judge had Machida up 29-28. It was a fight in which Jackson was aggressive, but Machida was landing the far better strikes. Controversial to an extent, had Jackson lost his career in MMA would have been in trouble. Machida wants an immediate rematch!
