HBO PRESENTS “REAL” CHAMP TONIGHT!
San Francisco, CA– Rarely do fighters attain the status of “World” champion. No, I’m not talking magazine rankings, computer ratings, or sanctioning bodies, I mean the real “undisputed” World champion. Defying the odds, and being forced to come in the back door of boxing, like a kid that didn’t wipe his shoes, Sergio Martinez is the man at 160 lbs. Sanctioning bodies should be running to him, instead the WBC (World Boxing Council or World Boxing Circus, that’s up to you) has done everything they could to stifle this man’s ability to cash in on his in the ring accomplishments.
JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ JR. “HAUNTS” SERGIO
The WBC, they took the middleweight title away from him and gave it to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. The Mexico City based sanctioning body, or “Mob” as HBO Godfather Larry Merchant calls them, anointed Chavez champion based on his last name, not because of his in ring prowess. Yeah, he’s undefeated, but he’s been suspended for taking a Diuretic, some say it was to lose weight, others to mask the use of Steroids. Regardless, after his last fight Jr. Chavez didn’t take a post-fight drug test! His team said it was overlooked, but according to Texas sources, neither the WBC or the Texas Commission had the equipment necessary for the mandatory test, which amounted to two cups that hold urine that you seal it with a piece of tape with signatures and dates!
FORCED TO GO IT AS CHAMPION EMERITUS!
Sergio, who hasn’t lost a fight since he mucked over in a 2009 fight with Paul Williams. Frightened, there can be no other excuse or reasoning behind it, then World middleweight champ Kelly Pavlik, put off three, if not four scheduled fights with Williams. He instead chose to fight Martinez who gave the Youngstown, OH native with a “thirst” problem a beating and busted him up over 12 rounds, losing unanimously.
SERGIO HAD THE LAST LAUGH……TWICE!
Martinez, not only did he batter Pavlik, who signed to fight him in what seemed like minutes after Williams announced he wasn’t waiting for Pavlik anymore and took a fight with Kermit Cintron, whom he defeated in four rounds, but he knocked Williams out in such a manner that the referee could have counted to 500 and Paul wouldn’t have gotten up. Adding to the Rodney “I get no respect” Dangerfield situation Martinez is in, HBO paid Williams more money and he was announced second by the ring announcer, something I’ve seen done less than three times in my 40-year run in boxing. And this came before Sergio was “sent to the woodshed” by the WBC who declared Jr. Chavez champion.
TONIGHT SERGIO IS CLOSE TO A 10-1 FAVORITE!
Britain’s Matthew Macklin (28-3-1, 19 KOs) is a decent fighter. His real claim to fame is losing to via Split Decision to Felix Sturm, who holds the WBA (World of Bunco & Anarchy) title last time out in a fight he appeared to win. He has two other losses on his ledger, the most significant was a KO 10 defeat to British light middleweight (154) champ Jamie Moore in 2006. That being said, Macklin is facing a fighter a level or two, if not three, better than him.
TITLE FIGHT BECAME 12-ROUND SPRINTS INSTEAD OF ENDURANCE TESTS!
If you believe the WBC, who changed 15 round fights into 12-rounders, reportedly for “fighter safety,” yet most experts find that to be baloney, with the real reason being that a 12-round fight would fit into a one-hour television time clock. Oh, and you can thank Marvin Hagler for that as well, for when he fought “Sugar Ray” Leonard in 1987, Marvin sold his title to Leonard for money. In a negotiating move by Team Leonard that was beyond stellar, they got a big ring, choice of gloves, as well as a 12 round fight as all of Hagler’s title defenses and his capturing the laurels from Alan Minter in 1980 were 15 rounds.
WBC SAYS JR. CHAVEZ MUST FIGHT SERGIO NEXT?
When I hear WBC czar Jose “Sillyman” Sulaiman state that Jr. Chavez must fight Martinez next, I believe him about as much as a 16-year old male telling his girlfriend he won’t “explode” inside! Like John Lennon used to say when he was with The Beatles, “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah.”
MACKLIN WOULD BE LUCKY TO LAST THE ROUTE!
Tonight on HBO, Matthew Macklin has bitten off far more than he can chew, thus his chances of winning are nearly nil. Chavez Jr. is the fighter “real” boxing fans that are not bias towards Mexican boxers want to see with a “passion.” But Chavez, who weighs over 180 lbs. come fight time, this after they stick a vacuum up his tail end enabling him to weigh 160 at the day before weigh in, has a big size and body mass advantage over Sergio. Still the Argentine native who learned to fight in Spain and lives in Oxnard, CA, would lick Jr. Chavez like a stamp!
