DULORME BESTS MAYFIELD IN HBO DIME

Still Unbeaten Sergey Kovalov

Still Unbeaten Sergey Kovalov

San Francisco, CA– If you were a friend or fan of Karim Mayfield, of which I am both, you had to be disappointed in that Karim gassed early against Thomas Dulorme. When you are the smaller fighter (see Joe Frazier) you have to be in condition to make the fight for 10 rounds. Instead Karim stayed on the outside early on and got rocked by the lanky Puerto Rican in the opener.

SAN FRANCISCAN LACKED “REAL” FIRE

Mayfield would bounce back in round 3 as if he were fighting according to a blueprint drawn in the gym. With only one fight in 2013, inactivity was going to be a problem I anticipated for the native San Franciscan. Down the stretch Karim would acquit himself and still not do enough to win some close rounds. At the end I thought it was a clear 6-4 or 96-94 for Dulorme who moves to 22-1, 14 KOs. Officially it went 98-92, 97-94 & 96-93 for the Puerto Rican Dulorme. Mayfield loses for the first time and is 18-1-1, 11 KOs.

SERGEY KOVALOV FAILS TO LOSE A ROUND

Let me start this off with any fighter who wears wrestling shoes in the ring to box is doing themselves a disservice. This has been confirmed time and again as wrestling shoes are made to put your weight on your heel, while a designed boxing shoe is all about digging your toes in the canvas when you punch.

BATTLED BACK AFTER AKA INCOMING FOULS

Now that didn’t mean that Cedric Agnew lost to Sergey Kovalov because of his shoes, but the late trainer Emanuel Steward looked into whether I was right or not on the matter. Learning that my assertion was true after consulting an Orthopedic MD, Emanuel took the wrestling shoes off of Oscar De La Hoya.

THOSE DARN WRESTLING SHOES

That being said, the shoes had nothing to do with Cedric Agnew being counted out in round 7. It was a shutout with 3 knockdowns, all caused by left hands to the right (lead side for southpaw) to the liver and rib area. Kovalov ascends to 24-0-1, 22 KOs. Agnew sees his 0 go and is now 26-1, 12 KOs.

BEST HBO LINE IN DECADES SLAMS STEVENSON

When asked about Adonis Stevenson, at first Kovalov didn’t want to talk about the WBC belt bearer (23-1, 20 KOs) who signed with Showtime instead of agreeing on paper to what he had verbally in that he would meet the fiery Russian in a unification match. But like Oscar De La Hoya looking to move to 140, seeing one Kostya Tszyu fight up close convinced him to avoid the Russian fighter. Kovalov shared the HBO bill with Stevenson on November 30, 2013 and destroyed Ismayl Sillah, while Adonis vanquished Tavoris Cloud in 7 heats.

THAT LINE THAT HIT STEVENSON ON THE CHIN

After some prodding on Stevenson, Sergey Kovalov said. “I think Adonis Stevenson is a piece of shit.” Classic television!
