HBO FIGHTS HAD JULY 4-LIKE FIREWORKS

San Francisco, CAAdonis Stevenson and Sergey Kovalev were victorious in defending the WBC and WBO light heavyweight (175 lb.) titles respectively in what is supposed to set up a bout between the two in 2014. Both fights on the HBO presentation delivered and if these guys go at each other in March or April of next year, boxing fans should celebrate because this is what the game is all about, or supposed to be about, the best fighting the best.

SERGEY YET ANOTHER RUSSIAN KILLER!

Kovalev is the real deal, a true representation of the beast that he is. Now 23–0-1, 21 K0s, this after his second-round knockout of Ismayl Sillakh (21-2, 17KOs). Sillakh tried to box in the opening round but looked more like Olympic sprinter Carl Lewis than a prizefighter.

EX-CHAMP NATHAN CLEVERLY ON SERGEY: “HE HITS HARD”

The fight would not last long into round number two, 52 seconds only as Kovalev knocked him down twice. Stunned that Sillakh could even beat the count the first time, the WBO champion Kovalev smelled blood and went for the kill. After dropping Ismayl again, the champion stood over his fallen foe and mocked him.

MAX KELLERBOY NOT A BOXER!

This action seem to either catch HBO’S Max Kellerman off guard, or the kid thought it was cheap. Truth be told the only thing Max has ever had to fight for in life is a good seat on the New York subway, thus he doesn’t get it from the perspective of a fighter. And he never will. Hanging out with fighters is not like a blood transfusion.

BODY LANGUAGE UNDERSTOOD BY FIGHTERS

But if a guy has been talking smack as the challenger had, Max doesn’t know but he had it coming. Not like Tony Ayala spitting on an opponent, Kovalev just let him know that diatribes are trumped by clean, powerful punches.

STEVENSON FIGHTS KRONK-LIKE

As for Adonis Stevenson (22-1, 19 KOs), the only surviving Kronk Gym fighter still punching for pay, was too much for the UK’s Tony Bellew (20-1-1, 12 KOs) stopping him after a knockdown in round six. The Englishman hadn’t won a round, in essence, he was way out of his league.

SERGEY KOVALEV-ADONIS STEVENSON BOUT CLOSER TO REALITY?

In the post fight wrap, Stevenson seemed to shy away from a Kovalev fight, instead calling out Carl Froch and Bernard Hopkins, to which the crowd, both live in Montreal and in TV land, thought was pretty lame.
