VIC WINS CLOSE FIGHT REAL BIG!
Rancho Mirage, CAIn front of a raucous pro-Armenian crowd at Agua Caliente Casino, Vic Darchinyan (34-2-1, 27 KOs) held onto his WBC & WBA super flyweight (115 lbs) titles with a hard fought unanimous decision over a gritty and determined Mexican challenger Rodrigo Guererro (13-2-1, 9 KOs). Surprisingly the unknown Mexican applied the pressure throughout the entertaining contest bringing the fight to the champion from Austrailia by way of Armenia. Vic was constantly backed up, but landed many clean blows to the head of Guererro who possessed a granite chin. The Mexican picked up the pace in the later rounds landing body shots and was able to absorb punishment, much of which was due to head clashes that produced a cut over his eye. Guerrero put forth a game effort, but according to the judges the fight wasn’t even close as judges Max Deluca scored the fight 120-108, Marty Denkin 117-111, and Cynthia Ross 118-110 all for the defending champion. The scores were nowhere near reflective of the competitiveness of this entertaining bout. Ring Talk’s ringside score was 115-113 for Darchinyan. The relatively inexperienced Guerrero looks like he may be a future champion at 115 pounds and gave a valiant effort.

Jerry Cantu scored it 116-111, Glen Hamada 116-111, and Johnny Davis scored it 114-113 all for the Australian. Ring Talk.com’s scorecard was 116-112 for the loser Angulo.
