UFC SWITCHES FORMAT FOR SECOND FOX PRESENTATION
San Francisco, CA– When Fox TV drew nearly 11,000,000 viewers in November for the Junior Dos Santos-Cain Velasquez, the broadcast was a bit of a letdown seeing the fight lasted 64 seconds as Santos pounded Cain like salt to become UFC heavyweight (over 205 lbs) champion. Tonight, the main event pits light heavyweights Rashad Evans (16-1-1) vs. Phil Davis (9-0) in a match that was supposed to take place last year but Davis was hurt. A former UFC light heavyweight champion, I anticipate a tough fight with Evans prevailing. Should this occur, Evans is in line for light heavyweight champ Jon Jones, who will lick him like a standup.
BATTLE OF THE “BIG MOUTHS” IN SEMI-MAIN
Two bad boys with big mouths go at it tonight as American Chael Sonnen (26-11-1) takes on Britain’s Michael Bisping (22-3) in the battle of two of the best promo guys in MMA. Sonnen was a couple of minutes short of a monumental upset of UFC middleweight (185) champ Anderson Silva, only to have Silva catch him with a fight ending choke hold. Initially Chael was supposed to meet Mark Munoz
, but MM was injured in training. Although Sonnen’s record isn’t that great, Bisping has been somewhat of a let down to me. That being said, Chael talks a better game and based on his almost beating Silva, he should be the slight favorite. If Sonnen wins a rematch with Silva before 40,000 fans is in the cards for this summer.
THIRD TELEVISED CLASH ALSO A MIDDLEWEIGHT AFFAIR
Brazil’s Demian Maia (15-3) will engage former All American (thrice) wrestler Chris Weidman (7-0) in the television curtainraiser. Maia is no slouch folks. He won the 2007 Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission World Championships. Interesting matchup has Weidman stepping up in class. In addition, Maia owns a submission win over the aforeentioned Chael Sonnen. That being said, this is a toss up with the lean towards Maia. UFC President Dana White is banking on this second Fox being a success, thus the three competitive televised fights.
