Jacobs-Quillin "Black v. Black" in Black & White

Jacobs-Quillin “Black vs. Black” in Black & White

San Francisco, CAPremier Boxing Champions, also known as Al Haymon Boxing, presents the “Battle of Brooklyn” as middleweight (160 lb.) residents Peter Quillin and Danny Jacobs do battle in a “Loser Leaves Town” match emanating from the City’s Barclays Center. The real “drama” here that trumps any other promotion is that Jacobs is an unlikely participant seeing he was diagnosed with a deadly form of Bone Cancer in 2011.

CANCER SURVIVOR SEEN AS “EASY MARK?”

The 30-1 (27 KOs) Jacobs is a great story. As if the resumption of a boxing career after beating the “Big C” wasn’t enough, his going 8-0 over sometimes pedestrian opposition since the 2012 return put him in the crosshairs of the unbeaten Quillin (32-0-1, 26 KOs) who think Danny, holder of a WBA title belt is an “easy” mark, a speed bump on the way to greatness.

LEE “TOOK THE AIR” OUT OF QUILLIN’S TIRES

When last seen in “prime” time, Quillin flopped in a 12-round draw with Andy Lee, a WBO title fight where he failed to make (try?) the weight (160). Although some are overly impressed with Quillin, I’m not. And while others like Jacobs here, it’s hard to really like “either” guy a lot. While most rate Peter a notch better than Jacobs, Danny is really an unknown commodity. We will know a lot more come Sunday morning. Current betting odds favor Quillin 12-5. As for unbeaten Gennady Golovkin, don’t expect the winner to challenge “Triple G.”

KLITSCHKO WANTS M AY”REMATCH”

Wladimir Klitschko (63-4, 53 KOs) is not taking the loss of the World heavyweight championship to Tyson Fury (25-0, 17 KOs) well. And while going 12 and losing to Fury certainly didn’t have the “smack” that his prior three losses, all KOs before March 2004, losing the title, it hurts.

THE EMANUEL STEWARD FACTOR

One thing Wlad and I can no longer do, we can’t call Emanuel Steward at 3 AM. NO KNOCK on Emanuel’s protege Jonathan Banks, but the truth is that Steward “was” the main factor in Wladimir going on an 11+ year undefeated run as the Kronk Gym Goldfather had an innate ability to take athletes to another level.
