DENOUNCING 15 ROUND TITLE FIGHTS

Prime Jerry Quarry

Prime Jerry Quarry

San Francisco, CA– A fortnight ago we looked at Jerry Quarry the heavyweight contender of the 60s & 70s and his sad state prior to death brought about by Pugilistic Dementia which is the clinical name for Punch Drunk. Having always favored the 15 round distance for championship fights, I have done a 180 degree turn. You see, I remember Quarry when he was sharp. After seeing this picture of Jerry, I’ve got to say any desire to see 15 rounds fights are no more.

HISTORIANS NEED “LET GO” OF HISTORY

Boxing Historian Ron Marshall is of the opinion that any title fights less than 15 should not be recognized as world title bouts. Marshall carries the same bucket I used to in saying that 12 rounders are for State & Regional titles. That a true test of a man’s will, skill and stamina is the 15-round limit. That athletes got by with hardly any of the nutritional and training advantages of today, etc., etc.”

SAYS JOSE RUINED BOXING

“It was an arbitrary decision by Jose Sulaiman, the WBC President to cut fights to 12. And no other sanctioning body stood up to that crap. You can’t tell me less people are dying per capita with 12 round fights being the rule. Sulaiman and TV should have not been allowed to change history.”

THAT HISTORICAL STUFF PROBABLY TRUE

Look at that picture of Jerry Quarry above and I can tell you that scenario is replicated so many times in boxing that if the real percentage of fighters who suffer severe residual effects that are life changing were aired it would blow the fan’s mind. It’s a cruel, cruel business. In addition, there are FBI tapes of a prominent boxing manager talking about how to take even more from a boxer.

SANS SEX TRADE BOXING TOPS HUMAN EXPLOITATION?

History proves not only are boxers broken up physically and possibly mentally after retirement, they are for the most part beyond financially broke! People say boxing is a sport when it’s a business. For every Oscar De La Hoya there has to be 25 sacrificial lambs laid before him. Being over matched for a few more bucks maybe, a guy with heart is his on worst enemy as he tries to overcome incomprehensible odds and win often leading to guys that aren’t really punchy, still they’re a little off.

ARE PICTURES LIKE THIS WORTH THE ENTERTAINMENT?

So next time you want to see Alfred Angulo get beat on some more, desire longer title fights, think less of boxers that lose more often than win, then you need to look yourself in the mirror after looking hard at this picture of Jerry Quarry who could once do the NY Times crossword puzzle in about 15-20 minutes. In the end, Jerry couldn’t feed himself.

THINK TONY WEEKS DID WRONG IN CANELO-ANGULO?

Brave referees can get guys hurt or killed. Tony Weeks did the right thing in pulling the plug when he did. Some guys have heart and will that allow them to eat lots of leather. Eventually it results in a bill you can’t pay each month. Can you you the fan understand that?

IN DON KING’S FAMOUS WORDS

The chances of Angulo pulling a rabbit out of the hat were like Don King used to say were, “Slim and none and Slim just left town.” They say a picture says 1,000 words. Think of Jerry Quarry next time you want see a fighter that’s “hurt” and want the fight to continue.
