ONCE GUYS AT 108 LBS. WERE MAKING $1 MILLION!
Tijuana, MX– At one point and time, and yes this was almost 20 years prior to Ivan Alvarez’ recent run, the 108 lb. weight class captured the imagination of the sports world when Humberto Gonzalez and Michael Carbajal engaged in a 1993 bout that was one of the most heart-stopping boxing matches in history. Since then, the division has never been the same.
BOXING ON THE CALIFORNIA/MEXICO BORDER
On Saturday night, WBO interim 108 lb. champion Ramon “The Prince” García (14-1-1, 8 KOs) and former champion Manuel Vargas (28-6-1, 13 KOs) did little for 12 rounds before the majority scores of 115-113 twice for Garcia, while the third jurist saw it 114-114. Underneath, ex-WBC 130 lb. guy Humberto Gutierrez (28-2-1, 20 KOs) won a ten round unanimous decision over Rene Gonzalez (27-3-1, 21 KOs). Scores were 99-91 & 98-92 twice!
PSYCHO JOHNNY TAPIA BEATS ANOTHER “STIFF”
Albuquerque, NM– The human “jinx” that is Johnny Tapia had another fight at home Saturday night that resulted in his dispatching Jose Alonso (32-16-2, 15 KOs) with a TKO 4. Tapia (58-5-2, 30 KO’s) will once again face fellow New Mexican Frankie Archuleta (27-7-1, 14 KOs) who was a winner on the undercard over Jorge “Human Roadkill” Reyes (21-29-2, 17 KOs), a loser of 18 of his last 20! In a move that will certainly not add to their credibility, the IBC sanctioned both of these farces as “title” fights!
BOXING IN RENO TAKES HIT WITH LOSS
Reno, NV– The story of Kassim Ouma who came here after witnessing years of carnage in his native Africa, continues as Ouma (27-7, 17 KOs) halted former Contender TV star Joey Gilbert (20-3, 15 KOs) in round six of a scheduled dime for the NABA middleweight (160) title. A knockdown of Ouma in the fifth (glove touched canvas) from a Gilbert right was the highlight for the Reno, NV crowd supporting Gilbert. After a flurry of shots in round six, Gilbert went down, got up and quit! Although only his third loss, Gilbert has been protected for about as long as he can! It will be interesting to see if the Reno crowd forgives the quit job!
