IS MOSLEY TAKING THE REST OF 2006 OFF?
If you listened closely to Shane Mosley after his Saturday night stoppage of Fernando Vargas, he seems to imply that unless you can give him a Floyd Mayweather fight in November, hes not fighting again until 2007. With a four fight winning streak in place, the 43-4 (37 KOs) Mosley, has come full circle. I dont want to sound redundant, but if you look at interviews two years ago with Shane, he was not gesturing with confidence. Its like hes underwent a metamorphosis. I would peg the Mayweather-Mosley fight an even match. While Las Vegas casinos will certainly make Floyd their betting choice, one should remember Floyd hasnt had a real fight in years!
WHO IS WINKY WRIGHT ANYWAY?
,
Although I understand Oscar De La Hoyas mindset, in that he wants to control the promotional aspects of boxing, bringing in Winky Wright, to me this just doesnt make sense. Granted, Winkys on a good roll, but are people flooding the HBO switchboards, and clamoring for more of Winky Wright? I think not! As for the Golden Boy Promotions offer of $1.5 million to Top Rank and Antonio Margarito to fight Wright, I find it nothing more than a publicity stunt!
LIKE CHEECH, ANTONIO HAS TO WAIT SOME MORE!
Antonio Margarito is the most avoided fighter at welterweight (147 lbs.). Now Winky, who has been fighting at 160, and certainly not the box office phenomenon that hed like you to believe, is calling the shots? If you are going to challenge a welterweight, I say be prepared to fight him at his weight. Having waited ever so long for a huge payday, $1.5 million isnt exactly what Antonio had in mind. Close followers recall that IT WAS Mayweather who turned down $8 million to fight Antonio. Although he might die on the vine waiting, Antonio, like Cheech Marin waiting for that fine chick Maria in one of the early Cheech & Chong movies, hell just have to wait some more!
BERNARD HOPKINS TAUNTS THE OLD GUARD
This is like a takeover, like two Fortune 500 companies coming together and merging. So, lets look at it as a takeover. Yeah, we, Winky, Oscar, myself and Shane, were all up inwell, Im in my 40s, but theyre all in their 30s. So we are aging as fighters, but were young as promoters.
SOLIMAN GETS HIS FIVE MINUTES OF FAME!
Is it just me, or do you think that middleweight contender Sam Solimanis drinking Australian beer instead of training? Reason being, Sam called Lou Di Bella, the promoter of World champion Jermain Taylor, a handful of unflattering names. After three straight fights, two against Bernard Hopkins, and a Draw with Winky Wright, Team Taylor is said to be looking hard at The Contender TV show champion, Sergio Mora. Sam thinks he should be in Taylors immediate future. Sam is not a bad fighter, but hes not the second coming of Marvin Hagler. At 32 years of age, and 32-8, with 13 whacks, the Australian is desperate for a big fight!
BALDOMIR NOT IN AWE OF ATLANTIC CITY FANS
Having beaten Zab Judah in his native New York City, Argentinas Carlos Baldomir thinks it is mind over matter, or in this instance, mind over crowd. With better than 16,000 paid Arturo Gatti-fanatics screaming at Gattis every move, the World welterweight champion says it wont be a problem. Im at my prime, I have no injuries, and I know the crowd will cheer him on. Baldomir, he realizes that if he beats Gatti decisively, the crowd will play no role in the fight. Arturo, recently a first-time father, will need to back Carlos up at the start. I dont see it happening, do you?
