MAYWEATHER FACES ANOTHER ONE-DIMENSIONAL FIGHTER IN MAIDANA
Las Vegas, NV– No one knows how to create a buzz better in the boxing game than Floyd “Money” Mayweather (45-0, 26 KOs). He sent the boxing blogosphere on fire today when he announced via twitter that he would be facing Marcos Maidana (45-0, 31 Kos) on May 3rd on Showtime PPV.
Speculation had been going on for months, much of it by the British press that UK native and former 140lb champion Amir Khan (28-2, 19 KOs) would be Mayweather’s opponent in May. Over a month ago this website hosted a poll as well as a story asking for a Floydcott of Mayweathers proposed fight with Khan. Our poll mainly asked if fans should boycott Mayweather vs. Khan. 98% of voters agreed with a boycott of that fight. Mayweather’s website and others hosted a similar poll. Floyd asked fans who should he fight on May 3rd, “Maidana or Khan”? Overwhelmingly fans chose Maidana who had a upset win over Adrien Broner (27-1, 24 KOs) in a WBA welterweight title fight in December. The irony here is that neither opponent in the minds of most experts have much of a shot of pulling off the upset.
MAIDANA WILL TRY AND WILL FAIL!
The only intrigue here is that while Maidana is extremely limited(both in skill and speed) he will at least try to make a fight of it. Most importantly the Argentine fighter knows he can’t outbox Floyd, unlike the American’s last two foes;lets call them “Tweedle Dee” and “Tweedle Dumb”, also known as Canelo Alvarez (42-1, 30 KOs) and Robert Guerrero (31-2-1, 18 KOs). While both are decent boxers with some skills, the idea that they would even attempt to outbox the best boxer on the planet is illogical. One must add though that neither presented a style that would even begin to give Floyd trouble. All one can hope is that Maidana’s pursuit makes for a more entertaining fight in which Floyd can score a knockout. In the view of most this fight on the surface doesn’t appear to be competitve. In reality there are only a few realistic opponents that come close to even betting money against Floyd; welterweights (147lbs) Manny Pacquaio (55-5-2, 38 KOs) and Tim Bradley (31-0, 12 KOs), junior middleweight(154lb) Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KOs), and middleweights Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KOs) and Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KOs). It remains to be seen if any of those potential fights can be made. As Mayweather is just as risk averse in his matchmaking and selection of opponents as he is inside the ring. The evidence is there to prove it.
