WILL “LONE STAR” STATE “GET” MARGARITO LICENSED?
San Francisco, CA– Forget all the posturing regarding Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather fighting on November 13, by hook or crook, and I mean that figuratively, the Filipino icon looks locked into a fight with Antonio Margarito. As of the weekend, people involved with the Texas Commission and Jerry Jones, the guy that owns the stadium where the fight would take place and the Dallas Cowboys of the NFL, they are working feverishly to get the fight.
YOU THINK ROOKIE DODD WILL ROLL OVER?
I know that there are people that work for the California State Athletic Commission, as well as a commission member or two, they are outraged that Margarito, whose license was taken away in 2009, this after he was caught with a “loaded” hand wrap before lacing up the gloves with Shane Mosley, first went to Nevada for a license instead of California where his privilege to box was taken away. Like a license to drive, it is not a “right,” to have a boxing license is a “privilege.”
NOW, HE’S IN TEXAS ASKING FOR LICENSE
After being denied in Nevada, a place where promoter Bob Arum carries a lot of weight, Margarito
is now asking Dick Cole and Texas to give him a license. Jones’ people, they have got $1,000 an hour attorneys and the Commission trying to make the fight happen. But in the end, it’ll depend on the California Athletic Commission. They might make a deal, one that doesn’t benefit California, have Margarito appear before the Commission with his hat in his hands, be scolded for trying to hurt or kill Mosley, and then allowed to box in Texas.
WHICH WAY WILL ROOKIE DODD BE SPUN?
The man that is running the California Commission is recently hired Executive Officer George Dodd. Met him once, can’t form an opinion on him just yet. But I can tell you that one of the guys he appears enamored with, retired southern California referee and now judge Marty Denkin, who has gotten tons of gigs since Dodd came on in February. This has not went over well with other California officials.
DENKIN’S $64,000 QUESTION?
Marty is the only California referee of note NEVER allowed to work a fight in Las Vegas. Don’t know why, but I do call into question his assertion that the Joey Torres-Perry Williams fight (farce) of 2002 was not “fixed.” The FBI has audio tapes of the parties involved rehearsing the fight and the Torres win prior to the fight. In closing, hopefully Dodd understands criminal law and works to keep a ban on Margarito in place. Because if he lets Margarito skate, Dodd will have been “punked” by Bob Arum and some rich Texans.
