Oakland, CA– Andre Ward, (166.5), Oakland, CA unanimous technical decision 11 Mikkel Kessler, (167), Denmark, for the WBA 168 lb. title. After dominating the more experienced Kessler (42-2, 32 KOs), whose face was a bloody mess after unintentional headbutts and punches, Oakland’s Ward (21-0, 14 KOs) earned a well deserved unanimous technical decision. The bout was stopped on a cut sustained earlier in the fight by a headbutt. Official time was 1:42 of the 11th. Scores were 98-92 twice & 97-93.
PHILIPPINES HAS ANOTHER CHAMP
Chiapas, Mexico– Rodel Mayol, Los Angeles, CA TKO 2 Edgar Sosa, Mexico City (WBC 108 lb. title) Filipino challenger Mayol (26-4-1, 20 KOs) surprised many in scoring a second round TKO against the busy Sosa (37-6, 21 KOs), who was making his 11th defense in 28 months. Sosa, badly hurt by an unintentional headbutt, was dropped again afterward which made the referee wave it off moments later.
ASCENDING ZSOLT WINS IN GERMANY
Schleswig-Holstein, Germany– Zsolt Erdei, (178.8), Hamburg, Germany MD 12 Giacobbe Fragomeni (195.8), Lombardia, Italy MD 12 (WBC 200 lb. title) Erdei (31-0, 17 KOs) defeated Giacobbe Fragomeni (26-2-1, 10 KOs) with a hard fought twelve round majority decision. It was Erdei’s speed that proved to be the deciding factor as both fighters landed good shots. Fragomeni closed stronger, but it wasn’t enough. Scores were 115-113 twice and 114-114. Zsolt becomes the first Hungarian to win titles in two weight divisions.
WBO TIFF IN CANADA ENDS UP EVEN
Ontario, Canada– Marvin Sonsona, (117.6), Cotabato del Sur, Philippines split decision draw 12 Alejandro Hernandez, (115), Mexico City, Mexico (WBO 115 lb. title. Sonsona (14-0-1, 12 KOs) had already lost his championship by not making the 115 lb. limit secured a draw against a determined but not so-skilled enough Hernandez (22-7-2, 11 KOs). Sonsona, who banked enough of the early rounds, played to crowd. For his part Hernandez never stopped coming forward. The final scores were 115-113 for Sonsona and the same for Hernandez, with the third score at 114-114. Thus the title remains vacant.

Kissimmee, FL– Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., (121), Bayamon, Puerto Rico TKO 7 Genaro Garcia, (122), Puebla, Mexico. Without any amateur experience, Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (17-0-1, 14 KOs) continues to impress, albeit against inferior opposition like Garcia (36-8, 20 KOs). Garcia was systematically dismantled by Vazquez Jr. until stopped at 2:49 of the 7th round. It’s time for Vazquez Jr. to step up.
