“LITTLE CUBE” IS ERISLANDY LARA’S MANAGER!
San Francisco, CA– It’s hard to believe that Luis Decubas Jr., whom I remember as a kid, is now managing among other fighters, the great Erislandy Lara. During a Tuesday night conversation, Luis Jr. was bold and got straight to the point on Lara and his getting screwed over by the “boxing establishment.” Turns out it was Decubas Jr. that nearly tore down the New Jersey Capital Building last summer when Lara got the short end of a decision in a fight he dominated, winning almost every round against the now incapacitated Paul Williams. This resulted in all three judges being suspended, and you haven’t seen this blind or corrupt threesome work a fight since.
LET’S LOOK BACK AT SATURDAY NIGHT
Against Freddie Hernandez (30-3) this past Saturday night, Lara showed that he has all the tools of the great fighters. A tight defense, fighting inside “the pocket” as Decubas calls it, used his jab when he wanted or needed to, worked the body and just flat out punished Hernandez over ten fistic frames. To call it a pugilistic trouncing would be an understatement. One judge, David Denkin had it 95-94, George Dodd, California Commission czar, if that isn’t enough to remove “DD” from the judge’s seat, I don’t know what is!
BLAME GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS FOR LARA’S PROBLEMS
Decubas has said that the last thing he wants is litigation, especially in the case of Lara, who at 29 is reaching his peak as a professional. “Lara can’t afford a year or so of being off, so that’s why I’m trying so hard to avoid litigation,” said Decubas. When I posed the question as to why Lara is being treated like a scrub, Decubas pointed the finger at Oscar De La Hoya’s “Golden Boy Promotions.” Now living in Las Vegas, NV, the guy I used to see as a kid in Florida is now playing ball in the major leagues of boxing. Decubas said, “I realize how Lara has been treated. It’s frustrating dealing with Golden Boy over this.” When I asked how could Lara be demoted from #1 to #3, Decubas again used the “L” word AKA “litigation.”
TOP RANK THREATENED TO SUE WBC
The WBC put Lara in at #1 after they wanted him to fight Vanes Martirosyan and somebody didn’t take care of business regarding the fight. I’m not pointing any more fingers, but you can figure out that Decubas didn’t make the error. Top Rank raised litigation threats, I was told, and the WBC changed the ratings. “As for Saul Alvarez,” Decubas says, “Lara’s the best junior middleweight in the world. He will beat Alvarez and in a couple of years, he’ll be the best fighter in the world.”
NOW AL HAYMAN IS HELPING CARRY LARA TO THE TOP!
Luis Jr., frustrated with the “boxing establishment” mucking Lara over time and again, brought in the most powerful man in boxing today in advisor/agent/manager Al Heyman. “Look, Al’s got the connections and he gets his fighters paid the most. I felt it was the best move I could make as I can’t keep Lara in a holding pattern. He handles the world’s best fighter and after Floyd Mayweather is gone he’ll have something to do with the next best fighter in the game.”
