HBO HAS WBO TITLE GO WITH “SERGEY”
San Francisco, CA– There are a few good light heavyweights (175 lb.) out there, but there are only two that and they are the WBO titleholder Sergey Kovalev and the linear & WBC champion Adonis Stevenson. They were supposed to fight a year ago, Stevenson apparently punked out and Sergey’s promoter Kathy Duva filed suit and then reached an agreement that that brought about Kovalev and Bernard Hopkins that ended up with Bernard being beaten up.
LOOK AT FRIDAY & SPIKE TV FIRST
That being said, before we get to Kovalev and Jean Pascal, the HBO main event Saturday, let’s look at what’s on the boxing plate Friday with the debut of boxing on Spike TV. Andre Berto (29-3, 22 KOs) will meet tough Joseito Lopez when “Big Al” Haymon brings boxing to what was first called The Nashville Network, Spike TV debuting tonight at 9 PM ET.
BERTO DERAILED IN MARCH TO FLOYD
Originally from Haiti, Berto was 27-0 in 2011 when he engaged Victor Ortiz and lost on points. Then Robert Guerrero beat the snot out of him. Berto was then brutalized by Jesus Soto Karas and stopped in a TKO 12.
HAITIAN NATIVE HAS SIZE EDGE
A comeback fight after 14 months in September 2014 against Steve Chambers (28-8) went ten and got Andre a confidence boosting UD 10. Friday, he will face a smaller (body mass) Joseito Lopez in a 12 round bout for a WBA welterweight (147 lb.) crown.
THE WBA IS MORE LIKE EBAY
You’re thinking, the WBA welterweight guy Keith Thurman was just in action last Saturday. Chalk it up to the WBA (World of Bunco & Anarchy) being able to collect two sets of sanctioning fees on the same title two weeks in a row and in two different fights.
STRAIGHT TO THE POINT ‘BOUT BERTO
Cut to the chase, Berto is damaged goods and Joseito Lopez is a weight class smaller than Andre. Joseito (24-6-2, 19 KOs) is the proverbial sacrificial lamb here as he was with Saul Alvarez at 154. But remember, professional boxing is making money and Lopez has made some by putting his head on a chopping block.
“BIG AL” WANTS & WILL GET WIN
The intent here is to bring Andre to the winner’s circle by “Big Al” Haymon. The likelihood of that happening depends on how far gone Berto is period!
PORTER IN LINE FOR EASY WIN
Shawn “Yawn” Porter is heavily favored over last minute Ecuadorian sub Erick Bone (16-1, 8 KOs) as Roberto Garcia didn’t even attempt to make weight.
“NON-LETHAL” LAST MINUTE GUY FOR “BIG AL”
And as is the case with Berto over Lopez, Porter (24-1-1, 15 KOs) will be at least one weight class bigger than Bone who has fought almost exclusively at 140, while this tilt is set for 147.
SHOWTIME HAS MIDDLEWEIGHTS (160 LB.) ON FRIDAY BILL
In a battle of unbeaten middleweights Antoine “Action” Douglas (16-0, 10 KOs) out of Virginia fights Thomas Lamanna of New Jersey (16-0, 10 KOs) on a Friday night Showtimne production.
“KILLER” KOVALEV BEING LET OFF CHAIN SATURDAY
HBO takes their act to the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada as Sergey “Killer” Kovalev (26-0-1, 23 KOs) will meet the “tanned” Canuck Jean Pascal (29-2-1, 17 KOs) in a WBO 175 lb. defense.
EXPECT HBO BOUT TO BE “ROUT”
Pascal has presented problems to some, but “KK” is a different breed and will eat him alive inside the distance.
