MIDDLEWEIGHT DIVISION NOW HAS NEW STARS!

San Francisco, CA– A fortnight ago, Gennady Golovkin of Kazakhstan (now fighting out of Germany) had his coming out party as he battered Grzegorz Proska around the ring, dropping the sturdy middleweight (160 lbs) for the first time in his career. In all, Proska kissed the canvas three times before the referee mercifully waived the contest off. Golovkin looked great and there are a lot of enticing options for him after an impressive United States debut on HBO’s Boxing After Dark.

“DOUBLE G” APPEARS TO “HAVE THE GOODS”

Golovkin is the rare mixture of brawler and technical boxer. He has great power in both hands but does not lack discipline like most fighters with some pop. It was that deadly concoction that allowed “Double G” to improve his career record to 24-0 with 21 knockouts. More importantly, he put on a show for the fans that puts him in a position to land some big fights.

BRAVE PROSKA HAD HEAVY HANDS!

The man on the other side of the ring, Grzegorz Proska, deserves a lot of credit as well. He was a live underdog, and was able to touch Golovkin with some powerful shots. Unfortunately for Proska, “GG” was able to touch him far more often. Proska displayed a great deal of heart and a solid chin in standing up to the power of Golovkin. He protested the fight being called off, this even after eating several shots that had him standing on wobbly legs.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR GOLOVKIN?

There are enticing match ups on the horizon such as the winner of Sergio Martinez-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. The opponent originally scheduled to fight Golovkin instead of Proska, Dmitry Pirog, would still make for an intriguing fight. Golovkin has said he is willing to fight at light middleweight (154), middleweight or super middleweight (168), which may open the door for fights with guys the likes of Erislandy Lara, Carl Froch, Saul Alvarez, Lucian Bute, Matthew Macklin and Arthur Abraham.

ACROSS THE POND AUSSIE UPSETS STURM

Perhaps the most logical opponent revealed himself on that same September 1st evening as Daniel Geale defeated long-reigning WBA middleweight champion Felix Sturm by split decision after 12 rounds. The Australian now holds the IBF & WBA middleweight titles. Geale-Golovkin would be a great fight and a litmus test to see where both fighters stand in a fairly loaded division.

BIG FIGHT IN GERMANY OR AUSTRALIA!

Sometimes the fights the fans want to see do not take place in boxing, but I am confident the promoters will get this one done. It is a win-win situation for both fighters, and would draw enough interest to warrant them risking their records and reputations. If the two sign, I see Golovkin prevailing. Both are skilled tacticians, but Golovkin’s wide edge in power would make the difference in the fight. I do not think Geale’s chin could withstand Golovkin’s power shots. Still, Geale certainly has a chance, and a fight between these two should be made as soon as possible.
