GENARO HERNANDEZ WOULD NOT TAKE EASY WAY OUT

BACK TO THE LAST GLORY DAYS OF BOXING

March 22, 1997 Corpus Christi, TX– In one of the guttiest and most sportsmanlike displays in years, Genaro Hernandez declined a certain victory by disqualification and fought on to earn a 12-round split decision to topple WBC super featherweight (130 lbs) Azumah Nelson at the Corpus Christi Memorial Coliseum. Nelson, 129, of Accra, Ghana, making the second defense of his second title reign landed two shots after the bell ending the 7th round. The second, a sweeping left hook to Genaro’s throat, dropped Hernandez, 129 3/4, East Los Angeles, CA, to the canvas. He was treated for over five minutes, and could have won the crown by DQ had he been unwilling to continue. Hernandez chose to fight on for five more rounds to win the title on an absurd split decision score.

GALE VAN HOYE’S SCORING RECORD ONE OF THE WORST IN BOXING HISTORY!

Judges Alfred Asaro of France and Richie Davis of England had Hernandez ahead with scores of 116-114 and 118-110. The third official Gale Van Hoye of Texas inexplicably favored Nelson 115-114 despite Nelson being docked a point for the 7th round round infraction or his inability to solve the taller challenger’s superior reach and movement. The “Ring Talk Worldwide” score care read 117-110, an almost obvious indication of Gnearoro’s domination. Said Genaro, “I wanted to prove to everybody I’m not a coward,” now 35-1-1, 17 KOs, alluring to the criticism after he bowed out with a broken nose following six rounds against Oscar De La Hoya, his only loss. “I fought the greatest world champion tonight. I wanted to beat him the right way.” Nelson, 39-4-2, 28 KOs, who had hinted at retirement, wasn’t ready to close the door on a return. “This is a game…anyone can win. I lost to the best in the division. I’m going to go home and think about what I will do next.”

CARBAJAL THWARTS AMATEUR RIVAL FROM CANADA

Michael “Little Hands of Stone” Carbajal, 107 3/4, Phoenix, AZ, won the vacant IBA 108 lb. title by wearing down amateur rival Scotty Olsen, 107 3/4, Edmonton, Canada, for a knockout at 1:05 of the 10th. Carbajal, who finished bloodied around both eyes, dug a left hook to the midsection that put Olsen down for the count. Carbajal, formerly the undisputed light flyweight champion in the early 1990s, said he wants to fight Ricardo Lopez next, improved to 45-3, 30 KOs, while Olsen sank to 31-3-2, 2 KOs.

LEIJA CLASSY IN VICTORY & DEFEAT WINS!

In a solid matchup, Jesse James Leija, 135, San Antonio, TX, earned a unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Joel Perez, 135, Houston, TX, to claim the vacant NABF lightweight belt after 12 rounds. Both fighters were bloodied in the grueling head-to-head war. Leija, who was penalized a point for hitting low in the 9th, won on scores of 117-114, 116-113 and 115-114. Leija former champ at 130 is now 32-3-2, 14 KOs. Perez is 22-1, 11 KOs.

Editor’s note from Pedro Fernandez. Having exclusive rights from Virgil Thrasher to reprint any and all articles from both Boxing Update & Flash magazines, for years boxing’s trade papers prior to the Internet, I thought this article was fitting in that it involved two Hall of Fame fighters, the ailing Genaro Hernandez and now rotund Azumah Nelson. As for Texan Gale Van Hoye, the judge who tabbed Azumah a one point winner in a a fight in which he was schooled, Gale, part of the “boxing establishment” for decades, is one of, if not the worst, most incompetent judge to ever judge boxing…period! In coming days and weeks, I’ll bring you some more of my work at Flash & Boxing Update, in addition to that of the late Jack Welsh, noted historian Lindy Lindell and the great Jack Obermayer, as well as others.

“RING TALK WORLDWIDE” THURSDAY NIGHT EDITION CERTAIN TO SMOKE!

When “Ring Talk Worldwide” hits the Sports Byline Broadcast Network and Justin.TV/RingTalkWorldwide airwaves Thursday at 6 PM PT, my guests include Genaro Hernandez, who will give us a preview of the upcoming Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley fight, as well as a medical update on the ex-champ’s health as he battles Cancer. Also on the show, the man I like to call “Triple K” in “King Kyle” Kingsbury, who was the MVP on a UFC Fight Night earlier this year. “Triple K,” not shy by any means and legitimate threat top any 205 lb. fighter in MMA, will lay out the UFC 129 card this Saturday that will be featured by a UFC welterweight (170) title fight between Georges St. Pierre and Jake Shields, this in addition to Randy Couture’s retirement against Lyoto Machida, and UFC featherweight (145) king and top ten MMA P4P Jose Aldo.
