FLOYD MAYWEATHER ENDS HBO PPV IN CONTROVERSIAL KNOCKOUT

Las Vegas, NV- Floyd Mayweather Jr. (146.5 lbs), Las Vegas, NV KO 4 Victor Ortiz, (147), Oxnard, CA
(WBC 147 lb. title. Mayweather (42-0, 26 KOs) was in control as Ortiz (29-3-2, 22 KOs) was trying to make a fight of it.  After Ortiz inexplicably (intentionally) head butted Mayweather Jr., the referee Joe Cortez deducted a point from Ortiz.  While Ortiz was apologizing for what seemed to be the third time, an opportunistic Mayweather took advantage of an unprotected Ortiz (hands by his side) and landed two shots, a left hook and right hand, knocking him out at 2:59 of round four.  An unsatisfactory ending to many.

Erik Morales, (140), Tijuana, Mexico TKO 10 Pablo Cano, (140), Tlalnepantla, Mexico. (Vacant WBC 140 lb. title) The legendary Morales (52-7, 36 KOs) though visibly slower against the virtually unknown but spirited Cano (23-1-1, 18 KOs) becomes the first Mexican to gain a “Title belt” in four weight classes.  Morales started off looking his age as Cano continuously beat him to the punch and opened cuts.  Ever so subtly, Morales’ accurate punching began to bust up Cano, causing the Cano corner to stop the bloodbath.  Time was 3:00 of round ten.

HBO PPV FROM LOS ANGELES

Los Angeles, CA– Saul Alvarez, (153.6), Juanacatlan, Jalisco, Mexico TKO 6 Alfonso Gomez, (152.6), Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico (WBC 154 lb. title) Alvarez (38-0-1, 28 KOs)  knocked Gomez (23-5-2, 12 KOs) down at the end of round one and then allowed Gomez to dictate the fight for the next four rounds.  Then midway through round six, a stunned Gomez was halted by a barrage of punches that prompted referee Wayne Hedgepeth at 2:36.  Gomez was clearly hurt, but in my opinion was alert and could’ve continued.
