NO NEED FOR PSYCHIC WITH FLOYD
San Francisco, CA–in hindsight, most of the so-called experts and pundits had Floyd Mayweather over Robert Guerrero prior to their 12 round-sometimes entertaining dance for the WBC welterweight (147 lb.) title Saturday in Las Vegas, NV. Hell, even Dan Rafael of ESPN.com had “Money” marked as the winner going in. That’s because of one thing and one thing only: Robert Guerrero is a very good fighter. Floyd Mayweather on the other hand is a great fighter.
MAYWEATHER BOXING DEFIES LOGIC
I hate to murder the King’s English here but, “Greatness prevails over goodness every time the competition is waged on a somewhat level playing field.” That being said, facing Floyd Mayweather in the squared circle of boxing is unfair to those who try and or think they can ruffle his feathers, for they all talk a good game sans being able to put up a good fight. After the fight, Ruben Guerrero, Robert’s father, continued his pre-fight tirade against Floyd who had just schooled his kid.
SCORES WERE NOT DEBATED MUCH
Those identical scores of 117–111, 9 to 3 in rounds, are indicative of Mayweather’s dominance. My scorecard read 119–109, 11 to 1 in rounds. Although “The Ghost” wasn’t intimidated, he was thoroughly befuddled. Instead of turning this into a brawl, stepping on Mayweather’s foot and pushing him over, Robert tried to out box the master. This effort reminded me of Thomas Hearns and Marvin Hagler attempting to outbox “Sugar Ray” Leonard.
GUERRERO PLAYED TO FLOYD’S STRENGTHS
He didn’t get rough, throw any elbows, or try to impose his will at all costs as he pledged prior. No, Robert Guerrero kept trying to outfox Floyd Mayweather round after round. What was it Einstein said, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results?” After three of the same, there should have been a “Plan B” in place. Not at any point in the fight did Robert do anything that indicated his strategy was well contrived. If not by three, certainly by the sixth, down 6-zip, the corner of papa Guerrero and co-manager Bob Santos looked bush league as they tried to out box the best boxer of this era.
THE MAYWEATHER PERFORMANCE
If you had to grade Floyd on this fight, it would be a perfect 10 across the board. His selection of the now 31-2, 19 KOs Guerrero was a genius move as he baited both fans and the media alike by saying he was going to instead make Devon Alexander a millionaire, when all the while Guerrero was the only real choice being considered. The execution and ring generalship exhibited throughout by Mayweather indicated that if he has slipped, it surely wasn’t noticeable as he rode his 36 year old legs like a unicycle.
“HURT HAND (SEE EXCUSE) PREVENTED KO”
After the 36-minute public workout that some say made him $80 million, Floyd stated that his swollen right hand, something as common after Mayweather fights as the sun coming up the next day, prevented him from going for the knockout against Guerrero. Most of you will look at the right hand, see that it is swollen and buy into what Floyd was saying. Still all night long Floyd scored with a variation of the right hand.
DID NOT FINISH WITH THE HOOK!
Whether or not it was thrown overhand, straight, looped around Robert’s gloves, the shovel punch delivery, Floyd landed it time and again in every round, and if you know anything about boxing you’d realize that the left hook following the right hand in combination is for lack of a better term, the “money punch.” Every great fighter, right handed or left, with the exception I think of Muhammad Ali, realizes that you always complete punch salvos with the closest hand, meaning a hook or jab. Floyd would not pull the trigger on the left hook after connecting with the right, for had he done so things might not have lasted 36 minutes in total.
FLOYD MAYWEATHER “STAR OF PORNOGRAPHIC” FILMS!
Mayweather fought a safe and calculating fight against Guerrero, much like he did in the Oscar De La Hoya snoozer. Both fights lacked any real drama, and there was no climactic point you can look back on and recognize as such. What I’m trying to say is that if Floyd “Money” Mayweather were in the “Adult Entertainment” business, AKA the pornographic film industry, he’d be a washout! Why? There would never be a “Money” shot at the end!
