Floyd “Money” Mayweather

MAYWEATHER HASN’T LOST SINCE PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON’S FIRST TERM

San Francisco, CAFloyd Mayweather hasn’t lost a fight in 15 years. Yeah, that’s right, 15 years. Having lost in the 1996 Olympic Trials held in Oakland, CA, that may truly have been down the lowest point of the now 34-year old Mayweather’s boxing career. That one-point (12-11) loss to Augie Sanchez is the only time I have seen Floyd fall apart emotionally. These escapades that Mayweather is accused of have happened out of the ring, not between the four ropes. Favored to beat Sanchez, the eventual 1996 United States Olympic Trials champion, Mayweather fell apart emotionally. In retrospect, I think the loss was a lesson that Floyd needed to feel, experience, as well as endure from a psychological standpoint in order to move to the next level.

TIMES IN OLYMPIC BOXING WHEN YOU COULD THE SMELL DECISION THROUGH GLASS!

If you’re wondering how Mayweather won the 125 lb. Olympic Bronze Medal, how he got to the Olympics was by beating Sanchez twice in the final two-man per weight class event, the Olympic Box Offs. In the actual Olympics in Atlanta, Floyd won three fights before being burned out of a Silver of Gold in a robbery type of loss when Bulgaria’s Serafim Todorov was given a one point (10-9) win. When they announced Todorov was the winner, referee Hamad Hafaz Shouman, instead raised Floyd’s hand. Subsequently one noted official, Bill Waeckerle, a referee, resigned, stating he could not be part of Olympic boxing after the fight. And while the bombing in Atlanta sent a shock throughout the world, Mayweather’s loss to eventual Silver Medalist Todorov sent a shock through the boxing world, bringing back memories of Roy Jones losing a split decision to South Korea’s Park Si-Hun at the 1988 games in Seoul Both decisions were so bad you can smell the stench through your TV set.

LATEST HAS SOME SAYING FLOYD’S PPV NUMBERS WERE FALSE

Having read the blogs and the email I’ve gotten in the last few days, there seems to be a “Birther” type of movement against Floyd. Like the accusations that President Barack Obama isn’t an American, people are saying the reported 1.25 million PPV buys attributed to Floyd’s fight last month with Victor Ortiz are a falsehood.
By the way, these nasties are coming foxing fans who dislike Mayweather, thus they will sling mud at him just for the sake of doing so. When I mentioned this on Saturday’s edition of “Ring Talk Worldwide,” HBO’s Larry Merchant thought the numbers were genuine. Besides, HBO, a Time Warner product, has to report their profits and losses to their Stockholders and being a publicly traded entity, HBO cannot lie about the numbers.

IF THE FIGHT DID $78 MILLION, WHAT’S FLOYD’S CUT?

If you divide the $78 million in half with Time Warner, you are looking at $39 million for HBO and Mayweather. Larry implies that Floyd gave Ortiz $3 million, that’s leaves Floyd with $36 million. So, just on the Domestic PPV front, Floyd grossed about $36 million before taxes. Be advised that these figures do not include any foreign rights for the fight, and that might be another $30-$40 million for Floyd. We’ll go with the low end, that’s $66 million for Mayweather, minus the 10% that goes to advisor Al Hayman, that brings him down to about, again on the low end, $59 million before taxes and training costs. Figure in an estimated 35% in Federal tax, as Nevada, where Floyd resides, does not have State Income Tax. You can do the math, but its well over $35 to $40 million after taxes.

IS PACQUIAO CLEARING THAT KIND OF COINAGE?

No, because Mayweather promotes himself, where Manny Pacquiao is giving his promoter Top Rank a huge cut, and Golden Boy Promotions a smaller portion. If that turns out to be 30 to 35%, Manny is not nearly making the kind of money Mayweather will, when (or if) Mayweather & Pacquiao ever fight, Floyd will make far more money than the popular Pacquiao.
