BOXING PEEPS SPLIT ALONG RACIAL LINES
San Francisco, CA– Making my way around the San Francisco Bay Area, Oakland, Berserkly, San Jose, and the like this past week, the “buzz” is all about “The Fight.” And when I say, “The Fight” I am not referring to Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier I, its Saturday’s Floyd Mayweather and Saul Alvarez showdown. Us Yanks favor Floyd as the Mexican fans are hoping this is the end of the “Mexecutioner” of the 21st century, that of course being Floyd Mayweather Jr.
NOT SO FAST FLOYD FANS!
Floyd and his backers are of the opinion that Canelo Alvarez is just another name to add to the list of Floyd Mayweather victims.Alvarez, nothing really special from a pugilistic point of view, but he’s 22 and Floyd is 36, so right away the “age” factor comes up. Truth be told, Mayweather is not your typical 36-year old fighter. At an age where Muhammad Ali was done, Joe Louis as well, even the great Larry Holmes, by their 36th birthday they were all mere shadows of what they once were. So while Mayweather doesn’t seem to be showing his 17-year tenure as a professional fighter, but guys get old overnight.
“GHOST” NEVER IMAGINED FLOYD’S “HAUNTED HOUSE”
After watching Floyd’s last encounter (I didn’t say fight) with Robert “No Clue” Guerrero, it is hard to reap anything positive from it seeing “The Ghost” as Guerrero is called, did nothing to press Mayweather into a stressful position. As far as fights go, victory #44 for Floyd was a mere “walk in the park.” The previous fight with Miguel Cotto showed that Floyd can “give and take,” but Cotto wasn’t weighing the near 170 lbs. we suspect Alvarez will weigh when the first bell clangs Saturday night.
THIS IS ROBERTO DURAN-DAVEY MOORE ALL OVER AGAIN
While I think Alvarez is young and hungry, this sort of reminds of Roberto Duran facing a much bigger Davey Moore in 1983. Duran, who began fighting in 1967 at 122 lbs., made his mark at lightweight (135), struck gold by defeating Ray Leonard at welterweight (147) and was thought to be too small for Moore, who unlike Alvarez with over 40 professional encounters, Moore had 13 pro scraps. But the amateur pedigree OF the late Davey Moore eclipses the professional resume of Senor Alvarez.
CANELO A PRODUCT OF GENIUS MARKETING
Although I think his people have done well in building up Saul Alvarez, I think we might be looking once again at “Smoke & Mirrors” meaning beating guys like Josesito Lopez is not worthy of getting a ticket to a Mayweather fight, let alone fight Floyd Mayweather. Truth be told, if Austin Trout believed in himself a little more than he did, Austin would’ve stepped into his punches, not step away as he threw them, Alvarez would not be undefeated. Trout had the pedigree, but lacked the confidence.
