DANNY GARCIA NABS SHOWTIME WIN IN PUERTO RICO
San Francisco, CA– It wasn’t an easy night for World 140 lb. king Danny Garcia. Although he remains unbeaten (28-0, 16 KOs) after a Majority Decision win with scores of 116-112 (8-4 in rounds) twice, while the third jurist had things even at 114-114 (6-6), it wasn’t the easy fight most pundits had expected. There were no knockdowns and neither fighter appeared hurt, but Mauricio Herrera (20-4, 7 KOs) was slick with his quick hands and decent defense.
SAN FRANCISCO FIGHTER “WAITING” ON GARCIA?
Unbeaten Karim Mayfield’s win over Herrera, now 20-4, only 7 KOs, says a lot about Mayfield’s (18-0-1, 11 KOs) abilities as he took a UD 10 over Mauricio Herrera with cards reading 98-92 (8-2 rounds), 97-93 (7-3) & 96-94 (6-4) last October in Verona, NY. “Hard Hitta’” Mayfield was an amateur standout who may be ripe for a title shot if he bests Puerto Rican Thomas Dulorme (20-1, 14 whacks) in a 12-round NABF go on March 29 under Sergey Kovalov (23-0-1, 21 KOs) defending his WBO 175 lb. diadem against Cedric Agnew (26-0, 13 KOs) in Atlantic City on HBO.
DEONTAY WILDER WIN BOOED AFTER REPLAY!
In the WBC title eliminator, unbeaten heavyweight and 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Deontay Wilder (31-0, 31 KOs) landed two seemingly NOT so devastating blows and Malik Scott (36-2-1, 13 KOs) was toast just 1:36 into the opening round. After seeing the punches on replay, the first of which was a near totally blocked left hook followed by a glancing right hand rendered Scott down and done! At 6’7, Wilder appears to be the leading American hope at heavyweight. But can he fight? We still don’t know.
“DONE MA” LOPEZ GETS OFF DECK AND WINS!
In what was exciting for as long as it lasted, Puerto Rico’s Juan Manuel Lopez scored a TKO 2 over Daniel Ponce de Leon in what was his first win over a decent guy since 2011. Knocked out twice by Orlando Salido and once by Mikey Garcia, Lopez was decked in the second round and came back to land a left hook that floored de Leon (45-6, 35 KOs0 in that same stanza before referee Luis Pabon made what appeared to be an early stoppage. With the victory, Dona Ma (34-3, 31 KOS) will get another shot at a money or title fight.
TONY BELLOW MAKES CRUISERWEIGHT DEBUT
When you are the opponent, somebody the house is betting against by bringing you in to lose, one rarely get an opportunity to win and when you do you don’t piss (as they say in England) away the chance. Valery Brudov was brought in from Russia to fight Tony Bellow and in the 7th round of a 12 round clash, Brudov had Bellow teetering on the cliff of defeat before he threw a low blow and the fight was halted for almost 2 minutes.
ROUGH RUSSIAN CAME TO FIGHT & WIN
Bellow, who had dropped the rugged Russian twice was still in a bit of trouble was abused a tad in losing rounds 7 and 8. But the Liverpool lad came back. Throwing a good left jab, a few feints here and there put together with right hands and savage left hooks to the body and head, Tony was beating Valery Brudov up convincingly. The end came in the 12th and final round when they both threw left hooks and Bellow’s landed before the Russian’s and dropped Valery for the more than a 10 count.
IMPRESSIVE OUTING FOR LIVERPOOL LAD
Valery Brudov left the ring at 41-5, 28 KOs, BUT more importantly under his own power. Having lost last time out in an IBF 175 lb. title tiff with Adonis “Superman” Stevenson, Bellow was testing the waters at 200 lbs. (cruiserweight) and he got good marks here while upping his record to 21-2-1, 13 KOs. With the exception of round 7 & 8, Bellow was in charge.
EZEKIEL BRINSLY REID BROOK AKA KELL BROOK A WINNER!
Born Ezekiel Brinsly Reid, British welterweight (147) Kell Brook scored a TKO 8 over punchless Alvaro Robles in a “work” fight. Punchless I say? Yes, the Mexican fighter left the ring 17-3 with only 3 KOs). Brook moves to 32-0, 22 KOs. It’s about time Brook step up his level of opposition.
ADAMEK BEATEN BY EC-SPARRING PARTNER ON NBC SPORTS
Tomasz Ademek (49-3, 29 KOs) has been “wading” in the heavyweight talent pool ever since his move up from cruiserweight in 2009. With an unbeaten log outside of a loss to then co-champion Vitali Klitschko, Adamek dropped a UD 12 to ex-sparring partner Vyacheslav Glazkov (17-0-1, 11 KOs) by scores of 117-110 (9-3 with a 10-8 round), 117-111 (9-3) & 116-112 (8-4). Polish born Adamek was the favorite and the “draw” in Bethlehem, PA over the upstart from Ukraine who flat out cleaned the Pole’s clock from the strt. Jabs, hooks, right hands, Glazkov just kept unloading on Ademek round after round with few exceptions.
