PROFESSOR TAKES SHOT AT BOXING ESTABLISHMENT

Liberty, NC-Boxing is tanking. We have over priced sub-par championship fights on PPV, very few network TV fights, too many sanctioning bodies with too many “champions,” fighters with guaranteed paychecks seemingly not giving their all, promoters making “behind the scenes” deals to benefit themselves, and a growing fan base that like in the 1976 movie “Network” who are getting “Mad as hell and not going to take it anymore!” Some are ready to give up on boxing altogether, and go with the UFC (MMA) or even the WWE. There is a growing interest, especially in the United Kingdom regarding bare knuckle boxing (which in the Professor’s opinion is the next big thing), but I still think there is hope for gloved boxing, IF we get back to our Old School roots.

IMAGINE FOR A SECOND IF THE PROFESSOR WERE IN CHARGE!

If I were made king of the professional boxing world, there would be one world sanctioning body, and to the traditional eight weight classes, I would add one concession. The heavyweight class would be from 176 to 220 pounds, and anything over 220 would be the super heavyweight class. There would be one champion per weight class, and each champion would defend his title a minimum of twice a year. In case of severe injury, the champion would relinquish the title to the number one contender, and when medically cleared to fight would face the interim guy.

12 ROUND FIGHTS ARE FOR SPRINTERS, NOT CHAMPIONS!

Also, championship bouts would return to 15 rounds. The reasoning behind shortening championship bouts to 12 rounds was a knee-jerk reaction, and has proven to be inconsequential health-wise, and for world titles, you need to separate the men from the boys.

NEED TO CHANGE THE WAY TOP LEVEL BOXERS ARE PAID

For four, six, eight, and ten round fighters, the process for securing fights and purses will continue to be negotiated and agreed upon and guaranteed for both camps as is. These fighters are underpaid as it is. However, for 12 round and championship fights, when a fight bid is made, the corner men, cut men, trainers, spar-mates, and training expenses for each camp will be covered, then it will be winner take all for the rest of the purse. This will ensure that each fighter gives their best, no more “broken toe” or “hurt shoulder” syndrome. Drastic? Perhaps. But drastic times call for drastic measures. The boxing fan will not stand for many more $70.00PPV rip-offs! And with boxing losing market share by the mile to mixed martial arts and even scripted soaps, I say, if you are not a part of the solution, then you are a part of the problem. Remember, never complain about what you allow! So, boxing fan, what are your ideas? I want to you to help me be a part of the solution!
