FORGET FLOYD, JUST REMOVE HIM FROM THOUGHTS
San Francisco, CA– There was no need to get “nasty” over my appraisal of Floyd Mayweather through 47 professional outings. The Mayweather posse was rabid in responding to my feelings that Tommy Hearns, Roberto Duran and Ray Leonard, all super champions of the 80’s, would have licked Floyd like a postage stamp.
GOLOVKIN TO “RUB OUT” RUBIO ON HBO
So with another Mayweather “outing” in the rear view mirror, there is time to look at the other fighters from whom Mayweather’s taking press from. WBA middleweight (160 lb.) champ Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) faces Marco Antonio Rubio (59=6-1, 51 KOs) October 18 on HBO from Carson, CA. The old Don King adage applies here. “His (Rubio’s) chances are slim and none and slim just left town.” The big fight at 160 in 2015 will be GGG vs. the winner of the PPV gold mine that is the Miguel Cotto-Canelo Alvarez WBC & Ring Magazine middleweight title tiff.
“FILIPINO FLASH” IN WBA BOUT AT 126 UNDER GGG
Multi-division champion Nonito Donaire (33-2, 21 KOs) duels Nicholas Walters (24-0, 20 KOs) of Jamaica is the main support and the HBO co-feature. Last time out in May in Macau, Walters destroyed what was left of Vic Darchinyan (39-6-1, 28 KOs). Donaire was wisely steered away from a Guillermo Rigondeaux rematch at 122
SPEAKING OF DON KING
Tried “The Donald” on the cell this weekend and the “Wirehaired Wonder” wasn’t available. It’s been almost six months since his charge Bermane Stivern (24-1, 21 KOs)snagged the WBC belt after thrashing Chris Arreola in Los Angeles and Bermane is apparently STILL not signed to go with unbeaten #1 ranked WBC contender Deontay Wilder (32-0, 32 KOs). Fight needs to be made, either Wilder wins or gets exposed as just another Alex Stewart who was 24-0, 24 whacks, before being disemboweled by Evander Holyfield in an exciting heavyweight tilt. Going 19-9, 16 KOs from that point forward, Stewart would lose to Lennox Lewis and Michael Moorer notably, BUT was robbed against George Foreman in Las Vegas. As careful as they’ve been with Wilder, you’ve got to have suspicions that if he were a boat, that there are apparent leaks.
OSCAR DE LA HOYA & JOE CALZAGHE TOP WBO HONORS
According to WBO President Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel, the 27th annual WBO Congress which will be held at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas (October 27-31), special honors will be given to Hall of Fame members Oscar De La Hoya and Joe Calzaghe of Wales. Calzaghe did the unheard of in retiring undefeated (46-0, 32 KOs).
