“Bare Knuckle Boxing” Champ Bobby Gunn

“BARE KNUCKLE” BOXING CAN RESURRECT BOXING IF GIVEN CHANCE!

Liberty, NC– In March 2012, on a day to yet to be determined, most likely in California or Arizona, James Quinn McDonagh, late of the Documentary “Knuckle” fame, will challenge Bobby Gunn for the World “Bare Knuckle Boxing” heavyweight championship. To date, this fight has not received much if any publicity outside the hardcore fight blogosphere. However, the powers that be in boxing proper are trying their best to stop bare knuckle boxing before it really gets off the ground.

THE GOLDEN RULE OF SPORTS IS…

Professional sports in general are run by the “Golden Rule” that is, “He who has the Gold makes the rules.” However, with this upshot of a return to the pure roots of boxing, without the dregs of the parasitic promoter’s fangs in and controlling it, and with a beginning groundswell of fan support, the powers that be are getting nervous. Professor Marbry thinks that not only this fight and its participants deserve more attention, but that this fight has the potential to usher in a brand new era in contact sports history.

AGAIN, NOBODY HAS EVER DIED IN “BARE KNUCKLE BOXING”

Now, before the uninitiated begin their rants, please take some time and at least think, if not do your research. In gloved boxing (of which I am still a fan), you can see winning and even defeated fighters leaving the ring with eye’s and face’s cut and swollen, or almost totally unmarked. And therein lies the conundrum. The unmarked faces give a false impression that no damage has been done, while the swollen eye’s and cut’s give the often false impression that that is the full extent of the damage done. The real damage usually occurs by sustained pounding to the skull by well-padded fists.

LISTEN TO THE FACTS FOLKS….PLEASE!

In bare knuckle boxing, the risk of brain damage is actually reduced substantially by the removal of gloves and padding, as the power of head shots and the volume of head shots are also reduced substantially, as the fighters do not want to risk breaking their hands. They will target the larger and softer spots of the torso, thus reducing the occurrence of damage to the brain. The problem will be, however, that any punches to the head will be more likely to open a cut, giving the appearance of being more barbaric, when in fact the opposite is the truth.

PEOPLE CAN GET HURT PLAYING GOLF!

Now, of course the fact is, any sport, and any contact sport in particular is going to have potential for injury or even death. People have been known to drop dead from a heart attack from a particularly tense hand of poker! It happens. However, if you are already a fan of boxing, MMA, kickboxing, etc. then the bare knuckle version of boxing should not only a viable sporting option, it should be a very attractive option for your entertainment dollar.

MORE ABOUT WORLD “BARE KNUCKLE BOXING” CHAMPION BOBBY GUNN

Bobby Gunn has an amateur record of 137 fights with only 11 losses. As a professional he is an eight time title holder, and the former International Boxing Association World cruiserweight champion. In addition to these accolades, he has had 63 bare knuckle fights, and over 100 “street fights” and now holds the title last held by John L. Sullivan himself, won in a sanctioned bare knuckle boxing match, August 5, 2011 knocking out a game Richard Steward at the Fort McDowall Casino, near Phoenix Arizona.

WHAT DOES THE CHALLENGER LOOK LIKE?

James Quinn is toughness personified. Highly regarded as one of the toughest bare knuckle boxers in the world, he has fought at least one fight for two and a half hours straight. In Quinn’s world, fights are not only bare knuckle, but are not time limited, no rounds, and last until one man cannot continue or quits. And, Quinn is undefeated. Come Spring 2012, there is going to be a tremendous battle somewhere!

“BARE KNUCKLE BOXING” MATCH WILL HAVE TWO REFEREES!

The fight will be arbitrated by two referees; one referee in the ring to control all the action in the ring, and the other on the outside of the ring to decide any dispute or questionable foul foul that may occur and not seen by the official in the ring. The referee in the ring shall be the sole official for the fight, unless he feels he may have missed something, then and only then may he consult with the second referee.

JUDGING ON THE 10-POINT MUST SYSTEM

There will be three judges that will score the fight on a “ten point must” system. The winner of the round will receive 10 points, with the loser of the round receiving 9 points or less, depending upon his productivity. In the event of an even round the judge must score the round 10-10 unless any points have been deducted by the referee.

TWO DOCTORS TO WORK THE CORNERS

There shall be two ringside Physicians at every fight, with one MD assigned to each corner. The Dr. shall observe at all times the physical (as well as mental and neurological) condition of the contestants and may stop any contest at any time to examine a contestant and to recommend a course of action, including termination of the bout, when in the judgment of the Dr., serious injury could result to a participant it the contest continues.

MEDICAL EXAMS PRETTY THOROUGH

Prefight examinations: In addition to the testing requirements which include a physical, a negative HIV, HEP B, HEP C, a dilated eye exam, and a CAT scan of the brain, each participant shall be examined within eight hours before the time of the bout. If the Dr. is of the opinion that the contestant is not fit to participate in any way, he shall notify the official in charge, and the bout shall be cancelled.
