BEATS CANCER & LOSES TO ASPHALT!
San Francisco, CA– At one point and time not so long ago, the other Dirrell brother, Anthony, NOT Andre, was fighting for his life against an almost unbeaten foe in Cancer. After beating “The Big C” (non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma) and with a proposed WBC 168 lb. title fight on the table for July, Anthony (24-0, 21 KOs) got into a motorcycle accident over the weekend that resulted in his breaking an arm and a leg!
DIRRELL BROS. HAVE “DARK CLOUD” SYNDROME
One might recall that Andre Dirrell, who in the minds of some is the lesser boxer of the two brothers, was seriously hurt after Arthur Abraham hit him while he was down and knocked Andre out. Soon thereafter, Andre (20-1, 14 KOs) took what could best be described as a 20-month “Neurological Sabbatical” before returning in December 2011 with a TKO 2 over Daryl Cunningham.
ANTHONY HAS HAD SHARE OF PROBLEMS!
In 2008, Anthony was arrested on suspicion of robbing a Franklin Bank branch. After being pulled over by the Flint, MI Police, driving a car that resembled the one used in the robbery, Anthony had a handgun in the car. He was released the following day and no charges were ever officially filed. Having been to Flint, I can tell you that I might want to have a gun if I were driving around the impoverished and crime ridden community.
BACK TO BOXERS & MOTORCYLES
James Shuler (22-1, 16 KOs) was seven days removed from his getting drilled by Thomas Hearns in one round in the semi-main event of the Marvin Hagler TKO 11 John Mugabi card when he died on a motorcycle in March 1986. Last week marked five years since Diego Corrales died on a motorcycle.
