EXPLANATION OF BRAIN INJURIES

San Francisco, CA– With the recent revelation that once beaten super middleweight (168 lbs) Andre Dirrell suffered some “Neurological Damage” in his last fight with Arthur Abraham some six months ago, I seem to be the lone wolf asking why it took so long to find out? What is even scarier about this is that I was told by two people, that the native of Flint, MI, had been recently training for a fight with World champ Andre Ward.

DAMAGE DONE BY FOUL NOW DEEMED SERIOUS

Apparently, the once beaten Dirrell never really felt right after Arthur Abraham hit him when he was down. The body, the neurological system, it tries its best to deal with punches certain to land. What I’m trying to say is that a majority of the time it is the punch you didn’t see coming, wasn’t expecting, those are the punches that can cause or manifest an already injured brain beyond that of just a “Subdural Hematoma.”

POSSIBLE TIME FOR PEDRO & BRAIN BLEED

It is an injury to the brain in which involves some bleeding of the brain. Unbeaten heavyweight Joe Mesi, hit in the back of the head by Vassily Jirov in 2004, he suffered a “minuscule” bleed and Nevada barred him from fighting, this after the New York Athletic Commission all but put Mesi’s medical records online. There was one time in 1984, after being beaten by Ernie Chavez, where I can recall acting very erratic right after a fight at the Showboat Hotel in Las Vegas.

BRAIN BLEEDS ARE COMMON IN NORMAL LIFE

You don’t have to box to suffer a brain bleed. Many Americans fall down, hit their head, but there are sometimes no symptoms to go along with the incurred injury. But John Q. Citizen isn’t likely to fall again and or further aggravate the situation. Nature has a way of absolving the small bleeds given a proper period of rest.

WHOLE BUNCH OF STUDIES ON BRAIN INJURIES

Seeing many athletes are in sports that cause concussions, there are many differing reports on the subject. The problem Medical Science has is that where do you draw the line? Nevada banned Joe Mesi after one small bleed, but relented when he won a hearing. Now the MMA and UFC are the big tickets in Nevada, and the state seems to be relaxing their stance on those who have had brain bleeds.

SOMETIMES YOU “GET SCRAMBLED EGG”

Repetitve Concussions

Repetitve Concussions

Like dropping an egg from a foot above to the table below, the yoke is protruding from the shell. You can drop another egg and this time the damage is not as severe. When a fighter gets “scrambled,” sometimes it takes, days, weeks, months to recover, and then there are the fighters that never recover, and yet keep on fighting. Take a look at 1984 Olympic king Meldrick Taylor.

RUMORS OF DIRRELL TRYING TO DUMP SHAW

At the same time this brain injury of Dirrell’s is made public, there are rumors and innuendo that this is all some kind of ploy to get away from promoter Gary Shaw. Handled by Al “Teflon” Heyman, HBO’s house manager of sorts, however this ends up, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Dirrell TRYING to fight again after a miraculous recovery.

YOU FANS NEVER SEE THE DAMAGE “AFTERWARD”

A brain concussion involves some bleeding of the brain. Repetitive ones, especially getting concussed while a bleed is ongoing, this is what drove Troy Aikman and Steve Young out of the NFL. The reality of the situation is that if John Smith got hurt playing in the NFL, he would be taken care of for life. In boxing, as is the case with Gerald McClellan, ever since he returned home remains in almost a vegetative state from a 1995 fight in the UK with Nigel Benn, there is no NFL Players Assn. All Gerald has is permanent disability and his sister Lisa. God bless the woman because to have to deal with Gerald who is volatile, sometimes violent, blind and nearly deaf, she is the black Superwoman. Gerald is in a condition that if I were in, I don’t think I’d want to continue.
