JOSE (JO-SAY) ALDO STILL UFC KING AFTER UFC 156
San Francisco, CA– If Frankie Edgar were a professional boxer and not a mixed martial artist, he would not like boxing in 2012. Why? Because of the bogus 12 round limits in world title fights. That being said, Edgar would’ve liked boxing back in the early 1900s when fights were 25 rounds or more. Saturday night in front of a packed MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Frankie Edgar just didn’t have enough time on the clock to upset UFC featherweight (145 lbs) champion Jose Aldo (22-1). Simply put, Frankie needs more rounds as the 5 five-minute rounds of UFC title fights it is not enough time for the 14-4-1 New Jersey native to utilize his incredible cardio.
FRANKIE TO TAKE OFF EVEN MORE WEIGHT?
Although the champion Aldo is a MMA legend, so is Edgar who was a former lightweight (155) champion before losing to Benson Henderson in consecutive fights last year. With his late rally not being enough, Frankie Edgar has now lost three championship contests in a row. The drop down in weight may not be over for Frankie as they are talking about him fighting one weight division lower at 135 lbs. Scores were 49-46 twice & 48-47. A very “workmanlike” performance for the champion.
CONVICTED STEROID CHEAT OVEREEM HAMMERED INTO DEFEAT
Most pundits were of the opinion that top ranked heavyweight contender Alistair Overeem would make mince meat out of Antonio “Giant” Silva. Two rounds of Alistair’s superb striking gave him the first two stanzas. At the start of the third frame, Silva who has a giant head and a 6’4 body ran straight at his opponent. Landing shots hard enough to make your television set move, Silva, who had been written off the list of top MMA heavyweights, would not be denied. The fight was called off at the 25-second mark of round #3 with Overeem down and out. Caught on Steroids last year, Overeem had been refused a license until a recent Nevada State Athletic Commission ruling, is now 36-12 and history! Silva ascends to 18-4. Even though it was supposed to be Overeem vs. heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez in mid 2013, just cause Silva beat Overeem doesn’t mean he gets the next crack at Cain as he was pummeled last May by Velasquez in a rout!
RASHAD EVANS HAS “LOST THE FIRE”
Once the UFC light heavyweight (205) champion, Rashad Evans had the potential to become an MMA superstar. But after losing the title and then fighting passively against Jon Jones who beat Lyoto Machida for the UFC belt, Jon Jones, his losing unanimously to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira on Saturday should tell Evans that he needs to find a day job! There was nothing as exciting in this fight as the final bell. Scores read 29-28 three times. Nog improves to 21-5, Evans drops to 17-5-1.
