BOXING CAN BE IMPROVED

Thousand Oaks, CA– “Boxing is a dying sport!” This type of statement has been floating around for some time now, but it gets stronger each year. Fact is, boxing will never die out because it’s part of American history. Joe Louis-Max Schmeling and Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier are so significant historically that they appear in high school text books, so the sport will live on as long as those legends do. But boxing is in a bad place, put there by these thieving alphabet organizations. The solution is actually quite simple, but anything but easy.

DUMP ALPHABETS FOR CORPORATE PLAYERS

Boxing needs to adopt the UFC type of philosophy, where there is one major organization running things that prevents any of the chaos in boxing today. But with the WBA, WBC, IBF, and now the WBO having weaved their way into boxing, that seems close to impossible. Close, but not impossible. Somebody needs to step up and offer a title that fighters would want more than an alphabet title, thereby allowing each fighter to dump his alphabet belt for something better. But what? It would take a major organization with the power to convince any fighter that that title is better than an alphabet title; like say Gatorade or Nike!

HOW ABOUT THE ADIDAS BRAND?

Perhaps those companies might not be interested, but how about Adidas? It may sound farfetched at first, but think about it for a second. Adidas has been making boxing equipment for years and has had several fighters endorse their equipment over that time, the most famous I can remember being ex-IBF feather (126 lb.) guy Naseem Hamed. I’ve even seen several fighters wearing Adidas gloves for fights, so clearly they are interested in boxing. Heck, even Reebok makes boxing gloves and has Amir Khan under contract, so there’s another option.

CAN SPORTS APPAREL COMPANIES BECOME PART OF A SOLUTION?

A sports company like that would be perfect for boxing. The best part would be that because it’s a billion dollar company, it would not need to cheat fighters by demanding a sanctioning fee. Instead, to lure fighters Adidas or Reebok could offer their champions free sports equipment as well as possible endorsements and commercials for their product, saving a fighter tens of thousands of dollars in boxing gear as well as savings on sanctioning fees they would be forced to pay by the alphabet bandits.

HBO HAD CHANCE TO “TAKE OVER BOXING”

For years I hoped HBO would try something like this, since they controlled most of the televised fights, but with Showtime having extended their boxing budget and at odds with them, we could end up with the same mess, only with two television network titles. It would take a major commitment from a major company like an Adidas, Reebok, or Puma, but that would be the only true way to get rid of the corrupt sanctioning bodies. If enough fighters dumped their alphabet titles for something better, than those alphabet cronies along with their interim, regular, super, and champions in recess titles would simply become some second-tier title like a USBA belt and would soon be deemed irrelevant. Let’s face it, how many more “Diamond” and “Silver” titles does boxing need?
