Adrein Broner Steals HBO Show!

BRONER A CLASS ABOVE PEREZ!

St. Louis, MOAdrien Broner, (130 lbs), Cincinnati, OH TKO 4 Eloy Perez, (130), Salinas, CA. (WBO 130 lb title) Broner (23-0, 19 KOs) looked as though he was alone in the ring as the “out of his league” (Perez (23-1-2, 7 KOs) suffers the first loss of his career. Pedro Fernandez said Perez didn’t belong in there with Broner, and that it would be the mismatch it turned out to be. Time was 2:24.

HBO BOXING AFTER DARK WENT AS PREDICTED!

Devon Alexander, (146.5 lbs), St. Louis, MO UD 10 Marcos Maidana, (146.75), Buenos Aires, Argentina. Alexander (23-1, 13 KOs) fighting at a more natural weight impressed as he easily defeats Maidana (31-3, 28 KOs). A knockdown of Maidana in round six was not called by the incredibly inept referee Steve Smoger Maidana was never in the fight after the referee’s instructions, that’s how one-sided the contest was! Cards read 99-91 and 100-90 twice.

FIRST OF TWO CARDS ON EPIX FEATURED BAD SCORING!

Stuttgart, GermanyAlexander Povetkin, (229), Chekhov, Russia MD 12 Marco Huck, (209), Berlin, Germany. (WBA heavyweight title) In a wildly exciting championship fight Povetkin (24-0, 16 KOs) squeezed out a “gift” decision over Huck (34-2, 25 KOs). Referee Luis Pabon Jr., seemed like he was he Povetkin’s payroll and he definitely played a role in the outcome by breaking the fighters repeatedly when there was no need to. I had it 114-113 Huck, while fellow RingTalk.com scribe Kevin Perry tabbed it 115-113. We hate to use the over utilized term “robbery,” but what can you say when the cards read 116-113 and 116-112 Povetkin, while the third had it even at 114-114 in a fight where the smaller Huck desrved the nod!

SECOND EPIX CARD FROM WALES

Cardiff, WalesNathan Cleverly, (174), Cardiff, Wales UD 12 Tommy Karpency, (172.25), Adah, PA. (WBO 175 lb title) Cleverly (24-0, 11 KOs) “cleverly” pitches a shutout over an outclassed Karpency (21-3-1, 14 KOs) by marks of 120-108 across the board.

ESPN 2 FEATURE BATTLE OF TIJUANA!

Dover, DEJuan Carlos Burgos, (129), Tijuana, Mexico UD 10 Cristobal Cruz, (128.75), Tijuana, Mexico. Burgos (29-1, 19 KOs) defeats Cruz (39-13-3, 17 KOs) despite being knocked down in the ninth. Scores were 98-90 and 96-92 twice.

SHOBOX FROM “SIN CITY”

Las Vegas, NVJessie Vargas, (146.5), Las Vegas, NV UD 10 Lanardo Tyner, (147), Houston, TX. Vargas (18-0, 9 KOs) remains unbeaten by earning a well-desrved victory over Tyner (25-7-2, 15 KOs). A relentless body attack (including some low blows) from Vargas made the difference. Tyner retaliated but no points were deducted. All cards read 99-91.

Deandre Latimore, (156), Las Vegas, NV MD 10 Milton Nunez, (157), Barranquilla, Columbia. Latimore (23-3, 17 KOs) almost blew it against late-sub Nunez (23-4-1, 21 KOs) suffering two knockdowns in the final rounds as Nunez came on strong. Cards were 94-94, 95-94, and 96-92.
