Lorraine & Don Chargin
DRAGON LADY’S PASSING STILL TOUGH ONE YEAR LATER
San Francisco, CA– There are certain things that I just don’t handle well. Death and terminal illness top the list of things that rock me emotionally. That being said, Wednesday, April 6, marked one year since the passing of Hall of Fame promoter Lorraine Chargin. The sometimes gruff, sometimes sweeter than cane sugar wife of promoter Don Chargin, she left the boxing world 367 days ago. Not that he will ever recover, Chargin, now 82, is busier than ever with his next show airing on Telefutura on April 15 from San Francisco with unbeaten Eloy Perez (20-0, 6 KOs) of Salinas, CA on top. That being said, even though she would kick my ass on occasion (usually when I had it coming), attending her funeral service last year in Cambria, CA was difficult for me.
ALMOST TURNED AROUND TWICE
While traversing California’s coast highway from San Francisco to Cambria, roughly half the distance from Frisco to Los Angeles, I stopped twice to reflect on Lorraine, Don, and the good times we had together. Being a sissy of sorts in certain instances, I on two occasions wanted, just wanted to turn around. But then I remembered how Lorraine took care of my daughter Jacqueline like she was her own, affording us free hotel rooms, great meals, this in addition to giving the three-year old a first row seat at any fight we attended together. That being said, the world lost a good person in Lorraine Chargin on April 6, 2010.
