New York, NY – Another solid weekend of scraps are on tap. This week, action is highlighted on Saturday featuring a scintillating rematch of one of last year’s best brawls.
LITTLE GUYS LOOK TO MAKE IT BIG
On the comeback trail after losing his belt to skillful banger Giovanni Segura (26-1-1, 22 KOs), feather fisted but gifted pug Ivan Calderon (34-2, 6 KOs) will once again meet his aforementioned nemesis over 12 scheduled rounds of throw down in a WBO title showdown to claim supremacy in the light flyweight (108 lb) division. Coverage from Auditorio del Estado in California, Mexico begins Saturday night at 9 PM ET on Intergrated Sports PPV.
GOT THE GOODS, BUT IS IT GOOD ENOUGH?
Having dealt with adversity by avenging his lone loss to Cesar Canchila by way of 4th round disposal in their rematch, and by warring with (and blasting out) his highly regarded foe Ivan Calderon; heavy-handed thug Giovanni Segura is no stranger at stepping up to a challenge. Even though Segura boasts 10 knockouts in his last 10 wins and now holds a major belt he earned via 8 round KO over Calderon, despite such accomplishments; questions still loom as to how well his “free swinging” style of reckless abandon will hold up against his tactical counterpart.
SHOW ME SOMETHING KID
Aside from not capturing a knockout win since 2006, Ivan Calderon is a spirited craftsman who controls his opponents with effective lateral movement and superb technique. Even though he held the WBO title for over two years, Calderon hasn’t dazzled fans in a fashion to be credited as a “must see” fighter. Aware of his critics, to gain positive public appeal; Ivan not only seeks revenge against adversary on Saturday, but looks to deliver an impressive performance in effort to change his publicly labeled lackluster imagine.
ESPN STARTS THE PARTY
As per usual, the popular fight series “ESPN Friday Night Fights” kicks off the pugilistic weekend. Each installment of the decorated series offers news, analysis of upcoming bouts, interviews, celebrity guests offering insight into the world of boxing, and competitive scraps. This week; entertaining lightweight (135) prospect Henry Lundy (19-1-1, 10 KOs) meets rugged east coast brawler Patrick Lopez (20-3, 12 KOs) over 10 or less rounds at the Foxwoods Resort & Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut, Friday at 9 PM ET on ESPN2.
