TOURNEY CONCEPT HAS FALLEN APART!
San Francisco, CA– Is it just me, or has the implosion of the Showtime “Super Six” tournament tough to swallow? It was billed as the “greatest thing to hit boxing in years,” a can’t lose concept of a round robin six man tourney at 168 lbs. featuring Andre Ward, Mikkell Kessler, Jermain Taylor, Arthur Abraham, Carl Froch, and Andre Dirrell. Taylor got KO’d by Abraham in the blink of an eye and was eased into retirement. In came Allan Green, taking Taylor’s place.
DIRRELL’S SUDDEN DEPARTURE BAD NEWS FOR ALL
When Dirrell was pulled this week, claiming Neurological problems six months after a fight with Abraham, the powers that be inserted, are you ready, 41-year old Glen Johnson. Now mad props to the one-time Ring Magazine Fighter of The Year, but Jamaican Glen (50-14-2, 34 KOs) hasn’t won a fight since Dick Cheney had a heart, and to insert him into this elite group at 168 is akin to throwing rock gut whiskey in with Crown Royal. Johnson meets Allan Green (29-2, 22 KOs) on November 6 in Las Vegas. Oh, and might I add, Glen hasn’t made 168 since 2000!
KESSLER OUT AS WELL!
Kessler is claiming an eye injury as his cause for leaving the all of a sudden not-so “Super Six” anymore.
REAL CHAMP WARD TO FACE ANOTHER NEWBIE
The 21-0, 13 KOs, World champion Andre Ward will take on Sakio Bika (29-4-2, 19 KOs) November 27 in Oakland. Biko, DQ’d in one his last time out against one of the many fighters named Jean Paul Mendy, has lost to solid fighters. like IBF champ Lucien Bute, then champ Joe Calzaghe, and Sam Soliman, whome he beat in a rematch. On paper and in rweal life, this is a mismatch! I’m told that Ward-Biko might be “an out of tournament” fight.
ADD ‘EM UP & WE ARE ONE SHORT!
No word as to who will be the next replacement. Right now it’s Ward, Green, Johnson, Froch, and Abraham. Why don’t they cut the bull sh*t. Let Froch and Abraham fight as they will in Finland on November 27 and Ward meets the winner! If Showtime tries to drag this tournament out to fruition, then they are doing themselves and their viewers a disservice.
