EX-FIGHTER, JUDGE, REFEREE, WBC LAWYER
San Francisco, CA– In between being a skinny kid that started boxing at 112 lbs, to that of a skinny man who fought at heavyweight, Arlen “Spider” Bynum found his place in the world both romantically and professionally. First off, he found a true soul mate in his wife Charlsie, with whom he has spent over 40 years. Then he became one of Dallas’ finest attorneys and all the while Spider continued being involved in boxing as an offcial both at an amateur and professional level.
WORKED GOLDEN GLOVES & WORLD TITLE FIGHTS
After fighting in the Texas Golden Gloves, Spider, named so because he has long skinny arms, became a referee and judge at both levels. Having judged Larry Holmes, Salvador Sanchez, JC Chavez, and the fight that changed boxing in my mind, the Larry Holmes beating of Randall “Tex” Cobb in 1982, Spider was always on TV. Spider even judged one of the worst televised “series” of fights between Leroy Haley & Saoul Mamby, known to insiders as the Mamby-Haley wars, not!
SPIDERMAN CLOSING HIS DOORS FRIDAY!
After practicing law for some 47 years, Spider Bynum is closing his office this Friday and retiring. With grandkids living with him and Charlsie, it’ll be interesting to see how Spider will remain “sane” being home during the day.
THOUGHT SPIDER WAS GONNA BE LIKE UNCLE BILL
Having been friends with the Bynum’s for some time, I always thought Spider would follow his friend and ex-Dallas District Attorney Bill Alexander, yes the same Bill Alexander that prosecuted Jack Ruby for killing President Kennedy’s accused assassin Harvey Oswald, who is still working the Dallas courthouse.
WONDERFUL SECRETARY GOING TO DALLAS PD
For as long as I can remember, the pretty lady that puts out the fires in the Law Offices of Arlen “Spider” Bynum is Veronica Gutierrez. A single mother of two, “V” is headed for the Dallas Police Dept.
SPIDER NOT YOUR STEREOTYPICAL TEXAN
A strong believer and advocate of Civil Rights, Spider Bynum is more than a lawyer, boxing judge or referee, he is one of the greatest men I have met in tenure on this planet. When the WBC, notably Jose Sulaiman, stripped Graciano Rocchigiani of their 175 lb. title for the purpose of giving it to Roy Jones Jr., Spider, then a lawyer representing the WBC and a member of the Board of Governors, ended up leaving after having issues with Sulaiman, this as Graciano successfully sued Sulaiman and company.
FRIDAY IS SPIDER & V’S LAST DAY!
All that being said, the Spiderman closes his office doors for the last time this Friday. With a tear emanating from my left eye, it is with both sadness and celebration that I have to report that the first ever member of Ring Talk’s “Wall of Fame“, the great Arlen “Spider” Bynum has hung up his legal gloves.
