ON VENTALATOR AFTER BRAIN SURGERY
Las Vegas, NV– When I got a text from Nonito Donaire, the world flyweight (112 lbs) champ at 2:00 AM, I knew it wasn’t a press release. Tragecially, “Z” Gorres (30-2-2, 17 KOs) collapsed after winning a decision over Luis Melendez (26-4-1, 21 KOs) Friday night in Las Vegas at the Hard Rock Cafe. Gorres ate a hard left in the tenth (final) round and went down. He arose and made it to the final bell. While awaiting the decision, “Z” was reportedly wobbling around the ring. After scores of 98-90 twice, and 97-91 were announced, Gorres collapsed. He was taken from the ring unconsious to a nearby hospital where surgery was performed to relieve pressure on the brain. “Z” is in extremely critical condition.
BAD WEEKEND FOR FILIPINOS THUS FAR
Besides the Gorres tragedy, both Mark Melligen and Federico Catubay lost on points to Mexican fighters Michael Rosales and Alberto Rosas.
