HAYE WINS WBA TITLE FROM VALUEV

Bayern, GermanyDavid Haye, (216 3/4) London, United Kingdom MD 12 Nikolay Valuev, (314 ½), St. Petersburg, Russia. (WBA heavyweight title) Many thought it impossible but a staggered now former champion Valuev (50-2, 34 KOs) actually lost a close decision at home to challenger Haye (23-1, 21 KOs). The “fight” was uneventful until the 12th round when Haye stunned the giant but couldn’t finish him. After a few tense moments of waiting for the decision, Haye accomplished what Evander Holyfield was robbed of last December by winning. Scores were 116-112 twice and even 114-114.

EMPTY ARENA 45 MINUTES FROM DAWSON’S HOME

Hartford, CTChad Dawson, (175) New Haven, CT. UD 12 Glen Johnson, (173 ½) Miami, FL (IBO & WBC Interim 175 lb. titles) The rematch was as definitive as their first encounter was controversial. Dawson (21-0, 17 KOs) soundly beat the suddenly old Glen Johnson (49-13-2, 33 KOs). Scorecards read 115-113 twice and 117-111. The 115-113 scores were too close.

ANGULO’S HARD TRAINING PAYS OFF

Alfredo Angulo, (153 ½) Coachella, CA. TKO 3 Harry Joe Yorgey, (153 ¼) Bridgeport, CT. (WBO Interim 154 lb. title) Angulo (17-1, 14 KOs) laid out previously unbeaten Harry Joe Yorgey (22-1-1, 10 KOs) for more then a ten count, several minutes in fact. Time of the knockout was 1:03 of round three. Yorgey absorbed a terrible amount of punishment for as long as it lasted.
