KOVALEV MAKES YET ANOTHER STATEMENT
San Francisco, CA– Although some fights are billed as professional boxing, that only means guys are getting paid. That being said, there were a lot of chalk fights on Saturday beginning with a match Stevie Wonder bet big, sight unseen, between unbeaten WBA/IBF/WBO 175 lb. titleholder Sergey Kovalev and Nadjib Mohammedi (37-4, 23 KOs).
NO RIFLEMAN IN STANDS
Outside of a sniper’s rifle from the cheap seats at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, Nadjib had no shot. With a trio of straight right hands all putting him down in round two, a two punch (right-left hook) combination finished him at 2:38 of round three. It was yet another dominant performance by the 28-0-1 (25 whacks) Russkie.
LOOKS LIKE ANDRE WARD-GENNADY GOLOVKIN IN 2016
Kovalev promoter Kathy Duva has indicated that World 168 lb. guy Andre Ward, represented by Roc Nation Sports, has indicated that Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) is angling for a Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) fight in early 2016 provided Golovkin gets by David Lemieux on October 17 when GGG” makes his Pay Per View baptism from New York.
KOVALEV SANS ANYBODY BUT WARD OR STEVENSON?
It looks as if Sergey is left with a weight jump and fight at 200 lbs. vs. WBA cruiserweight champ Beibut Shumenov (16-2, 10 KOs) who prevailed over 36-year old B.J. Flores via 12 round Unanimous Decision on NBCSN TV Saturday. Watching Flores’ debut in 2003, it’s been 12+ years and the amateur standout really hasn’t as a pro regardless of his 31-2-1, 20 KOs mark. Scores were 116-112 (8-4 rounds) on all three official scorecards.
ASSASSIN KOVALEV 5-1 FAVORITE WITH INSIDE DISTANCE HIT
Shumenov’s claim to fame is losing the WBA 175 lb. trinket to Bernard Hopkins, the geriatric champion fighter from Philadelphia that Kovalev beat the snot out of after Hopkins-Shumenov. Expecting Sergey to halt Beibut inside of a dime (ten rounds) regardless of weight or date.
“BOXING ESTABLISHMENT” WON’T CALL “GODFATHER” OF BOXING
The last thing that Duva, Oscar De La Hoya, Bob Arum et al, with the exception of outside insider Lou DiBella, the “Boxing Establishment” does not want to do business with Premier Boxing Champions’ czar Al Haymon.
PREMIER BOXING CHAMPIONS WILL WANT OPTIONS?
In order to make Kovalev and once-beaten linear champ Adonis Stevenson for 175 lb. supremacy happen, Duva must “deal with” Haymon. Let’s see if she does. BUT what if Kovalev wins, would Al Haymon want a piece of Sergey? Don’t think this is absurd…..unless you have a #1 ranking, “promotional options” are always a part of the business.
LARRY MERCHANT SAYS CUBANO GONZALEZ “WRONGED” IN PASCAL FIGHT
In a Sunday appearance on “Ring Talk Boxing,” Larry Merchant went out of his way to rail against the ten round unanimous decision that propelled Canada’s Jean Pascal past Cubano Yunieski Gonzalez with a 6-4 rounds (96-94 points). “The wrong guy won,” said Merchant. Yunieski is now 16-1, 12 KOS, Pascal 30-3, 17 KOs.
“HAWAIIAN PUNCH” ROLLS OVER SPEED BUMP IN “EL LAY”
In Hollywood, CA, 2000 Olympian Brian Viloria (36-4, 22 KOs) thrashed opponent type Omar Soto (23-12, 15 KOs, 12 losses by KO) in debut. A titleholder at 108 & 112, Vilioria, the “Hawaiian Punch” of Filipino descent scaled 112 and change.
MICHAEL JACKSON FIGHT LOVIN’ DAD “FELLED” IN BRAZIL
87-year old Joe Jackson, longtime boxing fan and father of the “King of Pop” Michael Jackson suffered a stroke in San Paulo, Brazil over the weekend and his heart stopped. Luckily for Jackson, he was in the hospital after falling ill. This is Jackson’s third stroke. As for the fights, Joe always had ringside seats and fine, I mean fine Asian companions.
