TO KNOW ALI IS TO …

Muhammad Ali

Muhammad Ali

San Francisco, CA– There are few things that matter more than life itself. And when you’re tip toeing through the latter part of your time on this planet, you look back and question your actions and motives. That being said, I’m sure all of us can second guess decisions we’ve made.

ALI HAS NO REGRETS HE SAYS

The one person that I’ve met that doesn’t back down from the good or the bad in his past is Muhammad Ali. I asked him why the stand against the Vietnam War had to be made, and were there any regrets, Ali shook his head to the negative.

REMEMBER COUNTRY WAS SPLIT ON WAR

“They wanted to use me, my name to lead young men to slaughter. Just couldn’t be part of it,” a conflict that cost 58,000 American lives as well as that of millions of Asians.

ALI “UNDERDOG” TWICE IN TITLE FIGHTS
While everybody is of the opinion that Ali’s best time as a boxer was taken away from him, it did not keep him from recapturing the championship he first won in 1964 from Sonny Liston, a decade later with his triumph over George Foreman.

RECALL PRE-FIGHT ZAIRE & FOREMAN

In both encounters, Ali was thought to be nothing more than lunchmeat and on these two occasions when he was the betting underdog, Muhammad would upset the Las Vegas oddsmakers twice in 21 years.

WALK TO ZAIRE RING OR GALLOWS?

In the movie “The Greatest,” Ali played himself and on the walk to the ring for the Foreman fight his cornermen were uncharacteristically mum. Ali confirmed to me that he did turn that night to his people and scolded them because he felt they didn’t believe in him.

PARKINSONS SILENCED “GREATEST” VOICE OF 20TH CENTURY?

Nobody was quite the orator as was the man born Cassius Clay. Outside of Martin Luther King, John Kennedy and probably FDR, I can’t think of any American figure in the 20th century whose voice was more identifiable. And yet today at 73 with limited speech, Muhammad Ali can speak volumes. To know him is to love him!
