RUSSELL STOPS SHOPWORN JHOHNNY GONZALEZ ON SHOWTIME
LAS VEGAS, NV– Looks like the odds makers were right. Featherweight contender Gary Russell Jr(26-1, 15 KOs) was just too young and too fast for the 33 year-old Jhonny Gonzalez (57-9, 48 KOs) Saturday night at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas. Gonzalez looked slow from the opening bell.
Russell knocked the Mexican down in round three with a right hook. It appeared that Jhonny never fully recovered from that shot and was down again twice in round four as Russell claims the WBC featherweight title. Gary somewhat redeems himself from the listless performance last year against WBO championVasyl Lomachenko(3-1, 1 KO) losing a clear decision. While Lomachenko is the superior talent, Russell should be expected to do better in a rematch.
CLOSE BOUT GOES TO HOUSE FIGHTER
In the televised undercard Jermell Charlo (26-0, 11 KOs) defeated Vanes Martirosyan (35-2-1,21 KOs) by unanimous nod. Vanes pressed the action and landed the cleaner blows, yet the Al Haymon managed Charlo was awarded the victory by scores of 96-94 twice and an absurd 97-93.
BROOKS RETURNS FROM KNIFE ATTACK AND CUTS UP MANDATORY
IBF Welterweight king Kell Brook(34-0, 23 KOs) battered overmatched Jo Jo Dan (34-3, 18 KOs)for four rounds in front of a packed house at the Motorboat Arena in Sheffield, England . Brook showed his full arsenal, landing uppercuts and right hands on the Montreal based Romanian. Dan was down four times before his team stopped the bout in the corner after round four. Brook called out fellow Brit Amir Khan (30-3,19 KOs) after the fight. It is expected to be a massive fight in Britain.
