BAD REFEREE TO BLAME FOR MCCLELLAN’S CONDITION
San Francisco, CA– One of the most tragic moments I ever witnessed was the night American WBC 160 lb. king Gerald McClellan nearly died as the result of bad officiating in a London fight with homegrown Nigel Benn shown on an HBO televised presentation. McClellan had knocked Benn out of the ring in round one and instead of being counted out, Benn was inexplicably allowed to continue.
“THE G MAN” REALLY WAS A “BEAST”
If McClellan were boxing today, the aforementioned nickname would surely apply as Gerald was a beast both as a boxer and a human being. The human being aspect involved a metamorphosis of sorts I will delve into shortly.
“THE G MAN” WAS A TAD TOO INTENSE
While truculent might best describe the fighter developed by the late Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward, truth is that Gerald was downright ornery at times when the Freeport, IL resident didn’t even need to have his “game” face on.
METAMORPHOSIS OF GERALD
Although I think it’s reprehensible, Gerald raised and fought Pit Bulls. The American Staffordshire Terrier, aka the Pit Bull is probably one of the most loving animals one can ever encounter.
GERALD REALIZED “LOVE”
After his favorite dog was almost killed in a fight, “The G Man” cried rivers of tears hoping the badly wounded animal would survive. This dog was like one of his kids and Gerald said he would never fight another dog.
DOG WAS LICKING GERALD
What got to McClellan was that with the canine being on death’s doorstep, all he wanted to do was show Gerald his love. They say it was a life changing experience.
BLIND, NEARLY DEAF, CAN HARDLY WALK
With today being just shy of being 20 years to the day, February 25, 1995, the day that changed the lives of McClellan and sister caretaker Lisa McClellan’s forever.
