LAWLER BEATS HENDRICKS BY SPLIT DUKE IN REMATCH
Robbie Lawler (24-10, 1 NC) scored a win over Johny Hendricks (16-3) on Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, NV. Their first fight back in March was a close decision that went in favor of Hendricks, and the second was more of the same, with many observers feeling Hendricks did enough to keep his belt. The bout could have gone either way, as the 48-47 cards in favor of each man showed. What was inexcuseable was the 49-46 card for Lawler turned in by Glen Trowbridge. Giving Hendricks only one round is inexcusable.
TRILOGY IN ORDER?
With the score tied 1-1 in fights, it seems a third fight is inevitable. I think Rory MacDonald will likely be next for the new champ, with Carlos Condit (29-8) and Tyron Woodley (14-3) looming large in the background. If Hendricks keeps winning, he will get another crack at the strap in the near future.
LIGHTWEIGHT (155) CHAMP PETTIS AMAZING
Anthony “Showtime” Pettis choked out Gilbert Melendez (22-4) in the second round of their championship battle. Time was 1:53. After a competitive first round that saw Melendez pursue effectively and saw Pettis land some solid strikes, the champion took over in the second and finished Melendez with a Guillotine choke. Pettis continues to prove he is a great athlete and a mixed martial arts star.
TWO HEAVYWEIGHT KNOCKOUTS UNDERNEATH
Travis Browne (17-2-1) knocked out Brendan Schaub (10-5) with just ten seconds left in the very first round. It was a fairly competitive round, but the superior striking and chin of Browne was too lethal a combination for Schaub in the end. Rounding out the main card was a Todd Duffee (9-2) knockout of Anthony Hamilton (13-4) in just 33 seconds and a lightweight SUB2 (4:19) by Tony Ferguson (18-3) of Abel Trujillo (12-6, 1 NC).
