SOLID BOXING CARD EMANATES FROM THE UK
Las Vegas, NV-This weekend the UK beats out the US in quality. Lets take a look at the grades of this weekends bouts. Showtime once again puts on a mediocre card, with a trio of Al Haymon advised fighters in percieved showcase fights.
Kiko Martinez (31-4, 23 KOs) vs Carl Frampton (18-0, 13 KOs)
IBF super bantamweight title
TV:AWE Network in United States
Saturday, September 6th: Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK
Grade:B+
Fight would garner an A, however Frampton who happens to be the challenger stopped Martinez in their first bout. Martinez, a native of Spain has won 4 in row since then, all by stoppage. Three fights ago he won the vacant IBF title. Frampton packs pop and is a good boxer puncher. Martinez is the typical come forward brawler. He won’t be intimidated by Framptons hometown advantage as he’s fought all over the world. He won His last bout in Japan against former world champion Hozumi Hasegawa. Both have improved since their first encounter. Have to favor the house fighter Frampton who appears to be the only fighter at 122lbs that could make for a competitive matchup with unified champion Guillermo Rigondeaux. Frampton is one of the best young fighters in the UK, and looks to make a statement in this highly anticipated rematch.
Adrien Broner (28-1, 22 KOs) vs Emmanuel Taylor (18-2, 12 KOs)
Junior Welterweight(140lb) fight
TV:Showtime Championship boxing
Saturday, September 6th: US Bank Arena, Cincinatti, Ohio
Grade: C
Taylor is actually a good test. Decent skills, a little pop as well. However his calculated style means he can be outworked, and Broner can be exciting against the right opponent, just wouldn’t bet on it here. A positive is that this is a homecoming of sorts for Broner, and it will be interesting to see if he can become a ticket seller in his hometown. Undercard features Lucas Matthysse and Andre Berto against subpar opposition. Matthysse’s opponent Roberto Ortiz has a glossy 31-0 record with 24 knockouts but has not stopped or defeated anyone of note. All of his bouts have been in Mexico, which suggests that he’s being brought here to lose. Three carefully selected opponents on another Al Haymon showcase.
