MAYWEATHER & “CHIN” KHAN APPEARS SET FOR MAY

Los Angeles, CA– All signs point to the biggest star in boxing, Floyd Mayweather (45-0, 26 KOs) taking on his least credible matchup in years in Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KOs). It is a fight that will likely be a blight-like footnote in the career of Mayweather and put Khan’s already stumbling on life support.
FLOYD SHOULD ONLY HAVE “SUPER FIGHTS” FOR MONEY HE GETS
Canelo Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KOs) was an undefeated young champion when he took on Mayweather. He held the WBC’s version of the light middleweight (154) title while Floyd held that of the WBA. “Cinnamon” may have been a bit green, but the fight was acceptable. Robert Guerrero (31-2-1, 18 KOs) held the interim version of Floyd’s WBC welterweight (147) and was his mandatory challenger. Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KOs) was the WBA light middleweight champion at the time Floyd faced him, and although he was a bit past prime, he gave Floyd a decent fight.
REMEMBER WHEN VICTOR ORTIZ DROPPED HIS HANDS?
Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KOs) was the WBC welterweight champion when he got his Mayweather payday, and was coming off the biggest win of his career against Andre Berto (28-3, 22 KOs). Shane Mosley (47-9-1, 39 KOs) was certainly past his best, but was considered number one at welterweight and was coming off a huge upset knockout win over division boogeyman Antonio Margarito (38-8, 27 KOs). Juan Manuel Marquez (55-7-1, 40 KOs), who had to jump up two divisions, was one of Floyd’s least credible opponents, but Floyd was coming off a 2-year layoff and Juan was considered top five ‘pound-for-pound’ at the time.
THE FIGHT MEANS NOTHING TO MOST
There is no good excuse for a Mayweather-Khan fight. It could be interesting, as it will be the first time Floyd has faced someone with comparable speed in years, but Khan in no way deserves this fight. He is 2-2 in his last four fights and has not looked impressive in years. “King Con” has not had an actual welterweight fight yet and has a reputation for having a glass jaw. This is sort of a lose-lose scenario for “Money May.” He could win by knockout, but that’s been done. He could eke out a competitive decision, which would not look so great for his legacy. What if he actually lost to Khan? The hype for Money would take a massive hit and never recover.
MARCOS MAIDANA A FAR BETTER FIGHT
I believe the fight that makes the most sense for Floyd at this moment is Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31 KOs). Unfortunately, Marcos looks to be locked into a rematch with Adrien Broner (27-1, 22 KO), whom he brutalized just one month ago. I applaud Broner for seeking the rematch, but I feel it can wait. What would make a lot more sense to me is to have Floyd fight Maidana in the main event and Khan go against Broner on the undercard. I don’t think a Mayweather-Khan fight sells particularly well, but a Mayweather-Maidana fight certainly would. The public just saw Marcos destroy “little brother” Broner and now want to see how he fares against “big brother” Floyd.
NO BUYING THIS PPV FOR “ZAK ATTACK”
I really hope this fight does not happen, but every day it looks closer and closer. The only saving grace may be a solid undercard, but even that likely won’t be enough to make this event a true success. Khan has been exposed, and will be exposed again in May if he fights the p4p best in the sport.
