Marvin Hagler faced Tommy Hearns, Oscar De La Hoya run down the stretch against Felix Trinadad, and the Mickey Ward-Arutro Gatti wars.

Every generation gets its fight, except this one. This generation will not see Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather, not at least until they are so old it no longer matters. Why, is it Manny’s refusal of “unrestricted” drug tests? Surely, it can’t be about the money, with each side being offered $65 million dollars. That will mean a $100 PPV, and its not worth it. And sooner or later, the networks are going to wise up to handing out that kind of money for inferior productions.

You know, boxing is not really boxing today. Not the way it was even back in the 1970’s and 1980’s’. Some guys might look good, but in general they don’t learn their craft. They’re not polished. You know, if you take a piece of gold from the ground, you know it’s gold. But you have to clean it, you have to polish it, you have to give it form. And that’s whats missing by and large in gloved boxing today.

And it won’t get any better. Not as long as some of these fighters are getting paid millions of dollars even though they don’t know how to fight. With all due respect to the Klitschko’s, both Wladimir and Vitali, but can you imagine either of them in the ring with George Foreman, Joe Louis or Muhammad Ali?

But with the current crop of bare knuckle boxers, you have a different breed of fighter. They are hungry. They are both respectful of the sport and of the fans, as well as of each other. And contrary to the plethora of popular misinformation out there in the public domain, bare knuckle boxing is safer than gloved boxing, MMA, football, and basketball. Heck, bare knuckle boxing, according to the British Medical Board is safer than cycling!

Bare knuckle boxing has been around since the garden of Eden, and is the Grandaddy of all contact sport, and it is high time for it to get some much deserved recognition. And in February of 2012, in Iceland, Bobby Gunn will defend his lineal undisputed world heavyweight bare knuckle boxing championship (traced back to the great John L. Sullivan himself) against #1 ranked contender James Quinn. Neither fighter is making $65 million, although both are fighting first and foremost to put food on the table for their families, and a roof over their heads, and to send their children to school, to make a better life. Secondly, they are fighting for the same reason that anyone who has stepped into the squared circle has laced up the boots…and thrown fists…to see who is the better man. And for those reasons, and for the honesty of this sport, bare knuckle boxing deserves at the very least, a chance at the mainstream sporting table. If given that chance, the character of the people involved will take care of the rest!
