LATINO & HISPANIC BOXING DOMINATE “RING” LIST
Miami, FL– If we look at Ring Magazine’s “Fights of The Year” from 1990 to 2010, Hispanic or Latino fighters have been involved in 14 of the 20. Some of these fights are consider the best in history. In each instance, both fighters left a little of themselves the ring.
1990 – Julio César Chávez (107-6-2, 86 KOs) KO 12 Meldrick Taylor (38-8-1, 20 KOs) I
1991 – Robert Quiroga (20-2, 11 KOs) W 12 Akeem Anifowoshe (23-1, 18 KOs) Note: Both men are dead, Akeem from ring injuries and died years later. Quiroga was killed by a Gang member in Texas, who is serving a life sentence for stabbing him 34 times!
1992 – Riddick Bowe (43-1, 33 KOs) W 12 Evander Holyfield (44-10-2, 29 KOs) I
1993 – Michael Carbajal KO 7 Humberto González. Dropped like he had been shot with a cannon, Carbajal staged one of the greatest comebacks in boxing history to win.
1994 – Jorge Castro (130-11-3,90 KOs) KO 9 John David Jackson (36-4, 20 KOs) In total control, Jackson lapsed when it came to concentration and Castro put his lights out with one left hook.
1995 – Saman Sorjaturong KO 7 Humberto González. Pedro Fernandez followed Humberto’s career closely and said he lacked heart. This was an upset!
1996 – Evander Holyfield KO 11 Mike Tyson (50-6, 44 KOs) I
1997 – Arturo Gatti (40-9, 31 KOs) KO 5 Gabriel Ruelas (49-7, 24 KOs) What can you say, Gatti was involved!
1998 – Ivan Robinson (32-12-2, 12 KOs) W 10 Arturo Gatti I. Underrated Robinson never got his props for schooling Gatti.
1999 – Paulie Ayala (35-3, 12 KOs) W 12 Johnny Tapia I (59-5-2, 30 KOs)
2000 – Erik Morales (51-7, 35 KOs) W 12 Marco Antonio Barrera I (67-7, 44 KOs)
2001 – Micky Ward (38-13, 27 KOs) W 10 Emanuel Augustus (38-34-6, 20 KOs) Augustus, a strange fellow who once hit an opponent at the same time with both hands, was useds and abused by the boxing establishment.

2005 – The late Diego Corrales (40-5, 33 KOs) TKO 10 José Luis Castillo I(62-11-1, 53 KOs) Controversy here as Diego spit out his mouthpiece to get extra time after a knockdown.
