HOLLOWAY-OLIVEIRA TOPS SUNDAY FIGHTS
Max “Blessed” Holloway
Los Angeles, CA- Max Holloway (13-3) was beaten soundly by an injured Conor McGregor (18-2) back in 2013, but has won 6 in a row since then. The featherweight (145 lb.) after taking out high-caliber fighters like Cole Miller (21-9) and Cub Swanson (21-7) is approaching a title shot. Standing in his way on Sunday night at UFC Fight Night 74 will be Charles Oliveira (20-4).
BATTLE OF THE YOUNG-INS
The Brazilian will certainly present a challenge for the young Hawaiian, but I think the 23-year-old Holloway will come out victorious. Because Oliveira is only 25, you can bet that we will see these guys compete for years to come regardless of what happens this when UFC Fight Night on Fox Sports airs Sunday.
WELTERWEIGHT (170) TILT CO-MAIN
The rest of the card will not blow anyone away, but Neil Magny’s (15-4) bout against Erick Silva (18-5, 1 NC) is a bit of a tossup. Tune in to see that one, as both guys have a good shot at winning. I would lean towards Magny, but it is a fight worth watching.
UFC TAKES MUCH NEEDED BREAK
After what seems like an endless streak of cards, the UFC will not be putting on an event next week. They have been spreading themselves a bit thin in terms of compelling cards the last few years, and taking a week off is a good way to help prevent over-saturation. UFC 191 takes place on September 5 and looks solid.
TITLE FIGHT REMATCH IN MAIN EVENT
John Dodson (17-6) gave Demetrious Johnson (22-2-1) the toughest fight of his current reign as UFC flyweight (125) champion. Dodson knocked D.J. down once and wobbled him on other occasions, but came up short on the scorecards in their 2013 clash. Johnson has improved a lot since then, but he is in for another tough night.
FORMER HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONS FACE OFF
Andrei Arlovski (24-10, 1 NC) and Frank Mir (18-9) have each held the UFC heavyweight (265) belt. Now, they will share the Octagon to determine who gets another crack at the championship. Arlovski seems to have a bit more left in the tank, but Mir is on an upset streak. Look forward to some good heavyweight action.
“RUMBLE” LOOKS TO BOUNCE BACK
Light heavy (205) Anthony “Rumble” Johnson (19-5) will attempt to climb back towards the top of the light heavyweight rankings after the beating he took at the hands of current “champ” Daniel Cormier (16-1). Jimi Manuwa (15-1) is a decent contender, but “Rumble” should be able to pick him apart. UFC 191 is a pretty stacked card, so make sure you catch this one in two weeks.
